"What is happening in Detroit could happen here," Dr. Reese said. "There are far too many un vaccinated individuals in our coun ty and many others who have had only one or two shots. While ex panding our program to take in arthritis and birth defects, we must not lose sight of the third face of crippling ? polio. It is still with us." By the end of September more than 090 persons had been strick end with polio in Wayne County (Detroit), half of them paralytic, and more cases were being report ed each day, the chapter chairman revealed. The Wayne County Chapter of the National Foundation hu pur chased 100,000 shots of Salk vac cine for large-scale group vaccina tion programs throughout the county and also is supplying large quantities flf needles and syringes for use in the program. Chapter volunteers are assisting doctors of the Wayne County Medical Society in the operation of the groyp cen ters. "We have been fortunate in our county this year in that the polio rate has been light," Dr. Reese said. "However, with many of our children and young adults unvac cinated, we are probably as sus ceptible to an outbreak as Det roit." The Wayne County Chapter pf the National Foundation is now spending almost (00,000 per week on car* of the victims of the epi demic, and the chapter estimates NOTICE OP FORECLOSURE NORTH CAROLINA - - WATAUGA COUNTY Under and by virtue of the pow er of sale contained in a certain Deed of Trust executed by J. Calf Sales Do Well This Year North Carolina feeder calf pro ducers are enjoying the best mar ket year since 1M 1, according to Guy Cassell, livestock marketing specialist for the N. C. Agricultural Extension Service. Figures from the first two feed er calf sales this fall indicate that prices will be well above those of last year and may top those of 1992, one of the best years in re cent history. The Rocky Mount sale Septem ber 18 iveraged close to $30 pef hundred pounds, up from the $21.6 average of the year before. Ap paroximately 1,400 animals were sold. At Goldaboro, September 10, the 807 animals sold aferaged $28.38 per hundred, up from the $21.41 average of last year. Casaell explained the difference in price of about $1.62 between the Rocky Mount and Goldsborq slaves by pointing to the much larger number sold at the Rocky Mount event. The Rocky Mount animals went to buyers from Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Marylan4 and North Carolina. The Goldsboro animals went mostly to North Carolina buyers. The out-of-state buyers couldn't get a truck load, explained Cassell. The marketing specialist pointed out that North Carolina farmers are doing a better job with their animals. At Goldsboro there were 47 choice, 187 good, 82 medium steer*; there were also three fan cy, 43 choice, 102 good, and 7) medium heifers.
