..Christmas Seal Gifts |j
; Should Be Made Soon
By MRS. FRANCES C. FRANCIS
Have you made your Christmas
Seal contrlbutionT Mest of your
neighbors have, according to the
. Tuberculosis Association. Are you
one of th* number who haven't?
'Did you say to yourself, "They
won't mica my small gift." 9
But your small gift is the whol?
point of the Christmas Seal Sale.
It was founded on the principle
'that small contributions from th*
many, many, many people who
want to see TB licked will do the
I job. The Tuberculosis Association
: people don't high-pressura their
: friends and neighbors into contri
buting. They don't solicit in stores
' and factories or ask for payroll
deductions. They dont ring door
; bells or solicit by phone. They
trust implicity in a letter explain
ing why money is needed to fight
. TB, a letter that you receive and
answer in private. In the more
than half a century of the Christ
Bus Seal Sale their faith has been
rewarded annually.
But you're still asking, "What
difference will my few dollars
make?" Here's one small example
out of many. In a laboratory in
Philadelphia rabbits are nibbling
on carrots. These rabbits, which
look like any other rabbits, have
been bred for generations far oM
purpose? 1? find out why some
get sick when infected with TB
terms and others do ML Some
day this research may lead to a
method of making us all resistant
to tuberculosis.
Christmas Seal funds help sup
port this research. Bat if that
support has te be withdraw* he
cause there isn't eoaugh money?
If there a rent Nungh carrots to
feed these rabbits? Haw about it?
Send your contribution today.

Forest Fire In
Caldwell Burns
Refuge Timber
Lenoir ? A forest fire described
as the worst in Caldwell County
in several years burned some 90
acre* sf the Pisgah National For
est and the Daniel Boone Wildlife
Refuge over the week end.
E. M. Manchester of the U. S.
Forestry Service said Tuesday the
blaae was first reported by watch
towers at 3 p. m. Saturday.
He said fire fighters controlled
the blqze by Saturday night, but
that crews battled Saturday and
Sunday to extinguish the flame*.
Manchester said that 334 deer
hunters ? some from as far as
Colorado ? were credited with
helping to keep the fire under
control. They fought with Federal
Forest Service crews.
The fire was described by. Man
chester as a crown fire. No build
ings were damaged. He said the
blaze was probably started by a
carelessly dropped cigarette or
match.
Manchester said yesterday
there is a possibility the game
season , will be prematurely closed
because of the extreme fire ha
zard during this very dry season.
He said leaves and foliage are in
a "very explosive condition."
