The first robbery discovered was j at Hilltop Drive-in. John Jackson, I operator, upon opening his estab- j lishment Monday morning, discov ered the place had been entered ?nd a juke box broken into and the m^ney removed. An attempt had been made to get into the cigarette machine, but apparently was unsuccessful. Five dollars in t pennies was missing from the cash (register. Entrance to the drive-in had been gained by "jimmying" the lock on a back door after cutting | the screen door. Time of the rob Sbery was placed sometime between midnight Sunday when the place was closed, and opening time Mon | day. Myers Motel Service Station, at ! Deep Gap, was entered in almost the same way, except the front . door was used, but the robbery wa? , not discovered and reported until ! Monday afternoon. Representatives Of Watauga At Safety Meeting The Governor'! Traffic Safety Council held its fifth annual meet ing in Raleigh Friday "to take ?tock of where we stand," accord ing to Motor Vehicles Commission er Ed Scheldt. Some 40 persons, including four representatives from Watauga county, attended the session in the Highway Building Auditorium. Sheriff E. M. Hodges, Blowing Rock Chief of Police Lewis Hodge, Traffic Safetyman Don Mc Cracken of the college, and Mayor R. B. Hardin of Blowing Rock took part in the council. Mr. Scheldt, who presided, talk ed informally about legislation he will recommend for improved traf fic safety. Some of the recom mendations include an increase in the number of highway patrolmen, chemical tests to determine intoxi cation of motorists and periodic in spection of motor vehicles. The featured speaker was State Senator J. Spencer Bell ft Char lotte, who is leading a movement to reform North Carolina's court system. His topic was: "Tar Heel Courts and Traffic Cases." An ef fort is being made to unify the codes of the various courts in the State having Jurisdiction over traf fic violations. Other speakers included Dr. Charles F. Carroll, State superin tendent of public instruction; Wal lace Hyde, director of the driver , improvement and accident records section qL:Ums State Motor Ve h^J?/yi|Vtment; and State Rep resentative H.
