AHS Bus Driver Wins In District Roadeo Allen Hill Greene, school but driver at Appalachian High School, placed firit In the District 27 School Bus Driven Roadeo, held at Lower Creek School in Caldwell County Saturday. Aa a first place winner, Greene is eli gible to participate In state finals at Chapel Hill June 12 and 13. Janette Barlow, Kings Creek High Schol, Caldwell County bus driver, was first place winner in the girl's division. First place winners were recip enta of $100 scholarships. Second place winners received cash awards of $80. They were John Biddix, Pleasant Gardens School, and Angeline Smith of Glenwood High School. Both are in McDowell County. Joe Ware, driver education re presentative of the motor vehicle department, had charge of the roadeo. He said the contestsants were given written tests as well aa actual driving problems. The contestants were required to have excellent records in bus clean liness, discipline, driving and oth er phases in safe bus driving. Contestants were all graduating seniors from their respective schools. Others attending the event from Watauga included J. W. Harrison, chief mechanic who helps train school bus drivers; and Milton Greer, contestant from Cove Creek High School. Charles W. Mason, State High way Patrolman stationed in Wa tauga County, was one of the judges. The winners were given recogni tion at a banquet Saturday night at Gamewell High School in Le noir. District 27 includes Watauga, Avery, Burke, Caldwell, and Mc Dowell counties. The scholarships were present ed by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. of Winston-Salem, and Hackney Brothers Body Co., of Wilson. Cash awards were given by Burke Farmers Dairy of Morganton. Legislator scores use of soldiers as "servants."
