GARDNER) I hive been having trouble with "Actinopelte" on a very Urge Southern Red Oak. Thia ia a fun tut disease which causes leaf ?potting and rcenita in rather severe defoliation. The diaeaae at I racks the lower leaves first and gradually works upward. The pathologiata tell me that it may be controlled by spraying but special equipment is required to cover a tree so large. They do give a word of encouragement by saying that the disease seems to work in cycles and ia more severe during murky weather in late spring and early lummer. Remember that anything which interferes .with the normal func tioning of the leaves of a plant will reduce food manufacture and may result in death if not correct ed. Two cases of camellia canker, or die-bafk, have just come to my attention. This is the most com mon diiew of camellia*. To control the diaaaae. cut away and deatroy all dying twiga and amall branchea. For cankera on large branchea, cut out the di aoaaed portion and apply an anti aeptic paint to prevent re-entrance of the fungus and promote heal ing of the tiaauea.
