By MIRIAM RABB (State Travel Editor) September's tangy blend of Summer and Autumn in North Carolina's Variety Vacationland is enhanced this year with new op portunities for scenic motor travel through Eastern America's high est mountains and the first Na tional seashore. PARKWAY ? As Autumn foli age begins at mile-high alti tudes, a new section of the Blue Ridge Parkway to Waterrock Knob, soaring 6,292 feet above sea level, is being opened near the new link-up of the Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park west of AsheviUe. Over 1M miles of the Parkway are available for Autumn tra vel in North Carolina this year. SEASHORE DRIVE ? A loop trip along almost 100 miles of oceanfront on the Outer Banks islands will be made possible by automobile ferry service scheduled to begin September 7 between At lantic, eastern terminus of U. S. 70, and Ocracoke Island in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The new privately operated ferry is the final link in the chain of bridges and free State ferries which now make Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, and Hatteras and Ocracoke Island accessible from the main land. FISHING AND HUNTING ? Pier and offshore fishing are prime along the entire North Car olina coast in September, and the Autumn run of channel bass be gins in weather mild enough for surf and sun bathing. Six salt wat ,er fishing contests continue. State wide, fresh water fishing is excel t lent, with the mountain trout sea son extending through September in many areas of Western North Carolina. Hunting seasons open September 5 on marsh hens and September 12 on doves. EVENTS ? Apple harvest in the Blue Ridge will be celebrated September 1-7 with the 13th an nual North Carolina Apple Festi val at Hendersonville. A Carolina Sailing Club regatta at Kerr Re servoir is September 12-13. One of the South's largest horse shows, the four-day North Carolina Championship which draws exhibi tors from more than 20 states, opens September 30 at the State Fair Arena in Raleigh. The out door dramas "The Lost Colony" at Hanteo and "Unto These Hills" at Cherokee play nightly except Mondays through September 6. CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Allen Watters, son of Dr. and Mrs. D. A. Waters of Gay Moun tain, Blowing Rock and Vero Beach, Fla., celebrated his thir teenth birthday last Friday. Many friends of the Gay Mountain area joined Allen for ice cream, cake and Cokes. This advice may well be heeded by visitors to Holi day Highlands, because, no matter what attracted them here in the first place, the autumn color sea Vanderbilt Lands Taken By Parkway Brevard, N. C., Aug. 20 ? Last holdings of the Vanderbilt estate in Pisgah National Forest has been acquired by the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to maps filed with Register of Deeds Paul Whit more here Monday. The 800-odd acre tract was known as the Vanderbilt lodge property add is on the 1 crest of the Piskah Ledge, near foot of Mt. Pisgah. The Blue Ridge Parkway from Cat* Head, or Elk Pasture, will now be able to stay on the crest of the ridge at the Vanderbilt pro perty and continue on to Wagon Road gap. Other lands from Cat's Head to Wagon road are in Pisgah Nation al Forest boundary and there will be no right of way trouble on these properties. Contracta to be let from Sandy Flats on the West Asheville road on a five-mile link toward Cata head this fall. It is expected that the entire 23 miles of the Park way from French Broad river to Wagon Road will be completed within three years or less. Probably more poets have tried to capture in verse the beauty of autumn than any other season of the year. Spring offers much in its awakening, summer offers much in its lushness, and winter is beau tiful in its sheer bleakness ? but in autumn one can see the real beauty of Nature's handiwork in the colors that bedeck the moun tains. It may seem early to be plan ning a trip back to the mountains in October, but in order to insure that such a jaunt may be possible, every effort should be made now to get back to the highlands then ? because it is in October the colors are at their peak. If Mother Nature follows her schedule of past years, she will have already started "painting" when October begini. As the days progress, so will the colors, and before mid-month, the whole Hol iday* Highlands will be a mass of color that will last through the month. If you can, plan now to spend some time with us; if you can't get away very long, come and stay as long as you can. If you have time you can plan your trip so you can get in a foot ball game at Appalachian State Teachers College; or you ?an get in a game of golf at one of the fine courses in the Scenic Triangle ? Linville, Blowing Rock, Boone area; or you can get in another picnic. Whatever you want to do, uon't disappoint us and miss the Colorama planned by Nature. Dr. Stuckey list* where speci mens of semi-precious and some precious minerals can be found ind where principal veins of ore ire located in the western area of North Carolina. The North Carolina counties of Alleghany, Alexander, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cald well, Cherokee, Clay, Haywood, lackson, Madison, Mitchell, Wata uga and Yancey are covered in the geologic report.
