Hospital Is Named For Late Charles Cannon, Jr. Banner Elk ? The new 100-bed hospital to be opened In this mountain community next fall will be named the Charles A. Cau tion Jr. Memorial Hospital. This was announced by Dr. Mar shall Scott Woodson, president of the Edgar Tufts Memorial Associa tion, which operates Lees-McRae College and Grandfather Home lor Children, as well as the heapi tal. The decision was made at a meeting of the board of trustees last week. Young Cannon, for whom the Mew hospital will be named, lost tils life while a member of the fcj. S. Air Force during World War 81. He was the son of Mr. and ' Mrs. Charles A. Cannon of Con cord and Kannapolis. Cannon volunteered as an Army Aviation Cadet in 1042. He was Sent overseas in September 1944 "with the rank of lieutenant and assigned to the Second Weather Reconnaissance Group, stationed in Karachi, India. He was reported mlslng in ac tion March 10, 1M5 during a flight in a B-25 plane for Myitky ina, Burma, to Chengtu, China. A year later the War Department 'officially declared him killed in action. Cannon was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. He also re ceived the Air Medal with oak 'leaf cluster. The new hospital which will bear the name of Charles A. Can non, Jr., is nearing completion. It is expected to be opened in Nov ember. It will include a 100-bed general hospital, a diagnostic and treatment facility and a dental unit, all complete with the most modern equipment. It will have its own 100,000 gallon water re servoir and a sewerage treatment plant. The completed hospital facili ties will cost an estimated $2 million. . . ' CHARLES A. CANNON, JR. Two other hospitals had been used here before the present one came into existence. The first was a 10-room residence opened toy the late Dr. W. C. Tate. This was followed by a 20- bed hospital. Dr. Tate operated the smaller Institu tions for more than 50 years. His son, Dr. Lawson Tate, is chief of staff and medical director of the present hospital. REASON FOR CLUCKING Humboldt, Tenn. ?
