Hospitality Of
Home Recalled
Editor Watauga Democrat:
Turn Backward, Turn Backward,
Ob Time In Your Flight. Let us
pause and take stock o f our mem
ories of those' happy days when
the home of Uncle Dave and Aunt
Sue Horton ? us they were known
to hundreds ? but as to me they
were the finest and most beloved
parents a girl ever knew, of those
days when that beautiful old home,
located in that peaceful valley
where only the sound of the bab
bling brooks, ' the bleat of the
sheep or the low of the cattle on
the hills would bre?k the silence
of the quietude.. Where the big
farm bell high on the post out
side the kitchen door would sound
the call for dinner, and when the
farm hands would gather in to
partake of the good things my
mother would prepare and place
upon that long, long table.
Then I remember how we chil
dren would gather around that
huge log fire at nite to study and
turn to my father for help with
mathematics and spelling perhaps
while he would be mending our
shoes at the cobblers bench, or
posting his books, and usually my
mother would be reading the Bible
and studying her Sunday School
lesson in preparation for teaching
on Sunday. Then when Sunday
came how we would hitch up Old
George and Rock to the fringed
top surry and load us all in, and
go across the hill to Cove Creek
Church.
How many of you reading this
ever visited in this home, and
partook of this genuine Southern
hospitality? I am sure their friends
could be counted by the thous
ands. Yet those good old days are
gone forever. They have long ago
been laid to rest on the hilltop,
the children have long since gone
out into the world to make homes
of their own and have children
who are also making homes of
their own, and there's none left to
look after the old home, so its
to be sold this month, but the
sweet memories will linger
throughout eternity.

Dear Rob:
The four of us enjoy your paper
thoroughly. 1 consider it the best
paper I have ever read in the
non-daily class. I am no expert
on papers, of course, and I judge
them aolely on their readibility
and coverage given to news of the
area and community they aerve.
As a home town girt, Ruby looks
forward each week to receiving it.
As a former resident, I enjoy
reading about the people and
places mentioned in it. Also 1 en
joy the special features, especially
your King Street column which
displays your rare talent and ver
satility in reducing to extremely
interesting reading everything
from humor and reminiscing to
serious comments on current
events. The girls enjoy it also.
They are familiar with some of
the people and places mentioned
from their visits and from hear
ing discussions of them by Ruby
and me.
Wish we could visit Boone and
our friends up there more often,
but it is a pretty long trip and
we stay busy most of the time.
You can bet we are thinking of
the cool mountain breezes right
now with the temperature here
at nearly a hundred and the hu
midity high.

Home And Farm Safety
Thoughts ? More than 3,000 peo
ple are killed each year by farm
work accidents. More than 11,000
farm residents are killed each
year in all types of accident.
You who live on farms can re
duce farm and home accidents ?
sometimes total disability, grief,
suffering, expense, unhappiness ?
by practicing safety everywhere,
all the time. Teach safety prac
tices to every family member.
Human Failures: Fatigue, hur
ry, lack of awareness, unsafe
equipment, lack of knowledge, and
improper attitudes such as impati
ence, thoughtlessness, false confi
dence and sometimes anger.
Is your farm and home safe
from accident hazards?
"Save a life ? it could be your
own."
Dr. Hugh A. Matthews of Can
ton, N. C. says, "Accidents do not
happen by chance, but nre associ
ated with attitudes of people." In
other words, if farm people be
come safety conscious and practice
safety habits, they can greatly re
duce the accident toll.

TV 450 MILES UP! You never know wbere your next
television show might come from. Take th? photo here.
It'i an aerial view of the Red Sea area flashed back to
earth from TV cameras in our country's recently launched
TIROS satellite. Orbiting some 4S0 miles out in space,
this satellite is observing global weather conditions. Tha
Red Sea is the dark body in the middle. At the left is the
Nile River, and the shaded area above is the Mediterranean
Sea. Amazing, isn't it? Incidentally, I'm happy to report,
the guidance system which helped put TIROS into orbit
was developed by telephone company scientists ? just
another of the many projects they work on continually
to make living safer and more convenient for us.
? ? ?
SPEAKING OF SPACE, have you ever thought how
easily we can cover space right down here on earth? An
ordinary Long Distance call, for example, can send your
voice practically anywhere in an instant and at the same
time bring you the voices you want to hear. Long Distance
? it's really a Space Age miracle, yet it's an everyday
service available to us anytime we feel like picking up
the phone. How about right now? The cost is little, but
there's always big pleasure in a Long Distance calL
? * ?
PHONE FACTS: In the U. S. and Canada about 17,000
telephones are added every working day to those already
in service? which adds up to over 4 million aew phones
