Serious Cholera Outbreak

Raleigh ? Unless swine producers

lina can exoect serious outbreaks
of hog cholera this summer and
full. Dr. H. J. Rollins. State Veter
inarian. warned todaf.
This ort'diction la baaed, he Mid.
cn the low percentage of swine that
have heeii properly vaccinated and
the increased movement of hogs
that may be infected with hog
cholera or exposed to it.
"Federal statistics show that
only 35 per cent or less of our
swine pooulation has been vacci
nated." he explained, "and the
minimum needs for prevention of
extensive outbreaks of hog cholera
reunite that approximately 83 pe>
cent of the swine population be
vaccinated. A much higher per
centile of vaccination of the swine
population should be maintained
at all times, both from a disease
control and economic standpoint."
Pointing out that the United
States has been a leader in control
and eradication of many serious
livestock diseases, the veterinarian
said:
"We have maintained a continu
ous attitude of appeasement and a
willingness to suffer recurrent
losses from hog cholera. It is con
servatively estimated that this dis
ease costs the U. S. swine industry
WO mill too annually, and many
countries embargo pork originating
from Ike United State* became of
the dangers of thU diaeaae. Tb;
blood. organs and tissues of hoes
sick with bog cholera, or that die
from it, are seething with virulent
virus of the disease."
Dr. Rollini said the muKi-million
dollar losses from hog cholera are
needless and, with fnw exceptions
such lone* can be prevented if
fanner* wil adopt the following
sanitation, management and vacci
nation program:
1. Maintain a healthy herd on
clean and uncontaminatcd prem
ises.
2. Vaccinate healthy pigs at the
proper age (not leas than six weeks
old) before exposure.
3. Rotate feeding areas and pas
tures at regular intervals.
4. Maintain the herd free from
internal and external parasites.
5. Provide separate, completely
isolated quarters for all herd ad
ditions and keep them under ob
servation for two to four weeks
before placing them in a healthy
herd. The quarters should be con
structed so as to be easily cleaned
and disinfected.
6. Transport all swine In clean
and disinfected trucks.
7. Do not feed uncooked gar

10. Control rodents and other

11. Employ a qualified veterin

on finding any disease in one or
more animals. Early diagnosis and
immediate treatment are of major
importance in controlling the dis
ease and reducing death losses.
Dr. Rollins said there are several
methods of vaccination for hog
cholera available for use in North
Carolina. He listed (1) anti-hog
sholera serum, which will produce
immediate but temporary immun
ity, lasting a few weeks or less;
(2) modified live virus vaccines
which gives longer immunity, and
(3) dead virus or inactivated vac
cines which produce an active im
munity in approximately 21 days
that usually lasts six to eight
months. He warned, however, that
the dead virus vaccines are not
recommended tor use on contami
nated premises or exposed swine.
He urged producers to consult
their veterinarians as to the kind
of vaccination program they should
now use to head off a late summer
or fall epidemic of the disease. He
also pointed out that some bad re
sults will follow vaccination if the
hogs have other diseases, are in
fested with internal or external
parasites, or the vaccines have not
been properly refrigerated, handled
and used.
He said none of the methods
will produce 100 per cent im
munity, but modified virus vaccine
will produce immunity in 90 per
cent or more of the healthy swine
properly vaccinated.

About two months ago he wai des
perately Ul ("we almost lost him")
due to Parathien poitMiian. He is
alive today ? no doubt, becauae
someone remembered seeing him
drinking front a hose which had
been used for sprayinf Parathion
on plants to control insects. This
clue indicated the treatment which
resulted in recovery.
With this near tragedy clearly
in mind I am repeating parts of
a column I wrote in May cancell
ing the proper and aafe use of
pesticides.
While much la known about the
handling and uae of pesticides, a
process of continuing education
will be necessary in order that the
average citizen might use them
safely and effectively.
A good beginning will be to ask,
"What are pesticides?" Simply,
they are chemicals used alone or
in combinations to control insects
and diseases which attack plants
and animals, rodents and weeds.
There seems to be no question
about the fact that the future
needs for food and fiber In 'this
country will be dependent upon
the intelligent use of pesticides.
For this reason, it is foolish to en
ter into wholesale condemnation
of pesticide usage juat because
there are cases of malpractice
which have resulted in unfortun
ate situations.
Too many people bur a careful
ly compounded Insecticide and
never read the Instruction* giving
specific direction* for dilution,
proper use and precautions to ob
s?rvV when applying the spray or
dust. And how the material can
be safely stored until the next
time needed.
For pesticides used en food
crops, residue tolerances have
been established by the Food and
Drug Administration. For practi
cal purposes, and to stay within
tke legal residue tolerance, the
number of day* prior to harvest
?re given tor pome chemicals.
It all bolli down to this: read
the manufacturer'* instructions
carefully and follow them system
atically. If you do this you need
not worry about the food you eat
from your garden.
