Methodists To
Lend Africa Aid
Rich***, Va. ? A nation-wide
call to Methodiats to make a
"sacrifidal response" in an April
30 offering to help Africa with
foot}, healing and leadership train
ing ha* been Usued by Bishop
Paul N. Garber for tbe Richmond
area.
The bishop (aid churches of the
Richmond area would participate
in the offering, (he largest single
appeal ever undertaken by The
Methodist Church. * The goat it
$2,900,000. ?
Bishop Garber's letter to the
churches pointed out:
"If there is any section of (he
world of which thinking people
everywhere are necessarily consci
ous today, it is Africa. What hap
pens there must affect largely the
whole world.
"Christian missions have been
at work in Africa for long year*.
What they have been able to ac
complish is one of (he most (dril
ling stories of missionary achieve
ment to be found on the page* of
hiitory. But preesnt events make
it clear that we must now gird our
selves for new and larger minis
tries to this troubled but promis
ing continent. The church must
move in now with new training
programs, for the Congo in parti
cular finds itself in possession of
new freedom with almost no
trained leadership.
"No emergency that we have
brought to the attention of the
church has been more serious or
more worthy of sacrificial re
sponse."
