Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Clawson of Blowing Rock announce the birth of a son, Gary Todd, on Friday, April 28 at Blowing Rock Hospital. Local Garden Clubs Given Honors At the convention of North Car olina Garden Clubt, Inc., which was held at the Jack Tar Durham Hotel in Durham on April 26-26, all four garden clubs of Boone re ceived honor certificates. The Ap palachian and the Blue Ridge Clubs received the Gold Star award, the Blue Ridge standing second in the state in the number of honor points received. The Blue Ridge Club was award ed the Powell Bowl, state award for the best beautification pro gram covering two years or more. The application for this award was a report on such beautifica tion projects of the club as The Model Mile, planting the Appala chian Elementary School grounds, the Watauga Hospital grounds, town plots, dogwood planting, and other undertakings of a similar na ture. The report covered a ten-year period, 'rom 1990 through 1960. The presentation of this silver bowl was made at the Awards Banquet, and Mrs. H. M. Cooke,' retiring club president, accepted' it for the club. It is now on dis play at Stallings Jewelry Store. Among those attending the Music Educators Conference in Atbeville last week end were Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Agle, Richard and Bill Agle, Phil Minor, Miss Ala Sue McGuire, Dr. and Mrs. W. M. Matheson, Bill Matheson, Mr. George Kirsten, and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wilson, Jr. Mrs. Dwight Teague and son, Mitchell of North Wilkesboro, Route 2, spent last week visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winder at Bethel. Boone garden club members at tending the convention were Mrs. H. M. Cooke, Mrs. B. W. Stalling*, and Mrs. James Winkler of the Blue Ridge Club, Mrs. Max Dixon of the Appalachian Club, and Mrs. Herman Wilcox of the Rhododen dron Club. About 900 delegates from state garden clubs were in attendance at the convention. Some of the outstanding speakers were Dr. E. R. Honeywell of Purdue Univer sity, National Horticulture Chair man, who spoke on "Trial Gard ens" and Mrs. E. N. Meriwether of Mobile, South Atlantic Region al Director. Her theme was "Pro tecting Our Treasures." Special entertainment provided for the delegates included the President's Tea in the Sarah P. Duke Memor ial Garden on Tuesday afternoon and a trip to the Fragrance Gar den at Camp Butner on Wednes day afternoon. This garden is a project of North Carolina Garden Club Inc. One item of convention busi ness of particular interest to Boone gardeners and other resi dents was the report on the Dan iel Boone Botanical Garden. Mrs. B. W. Stallings, State Chairman of this project gave a thorough re port on the purposes, the plan, and the progress of the garden. Much interest and enthusiasm in this undertaking was evidenced at the meeting. WAYNE JOHNSON MOTORS Brushy Fork Home Club The April meeting of the Brushy Fork Home Demonstration Club met Tuesday, April 25, at the home 6f Mrs. Charlie Moody. The meeting was called to order by president and Mrs. Clay Verne Greene gave the devotional. Club collect was repeated by all in uni son as the prayer. The song of the month, 'Ho! For Carolina" was sung. Minutes of last meeting was read. There were eleven members present. Three members attended the district meeting at Banner Elk. Reports were given by Mrs. Ed die Norris and Mrs. Hiram Brooks on "Hawaii." Pictures and scenes were shown of this state. Our club voted to send flowers to church and then be given to ?ick person in the community for the project for National Home De monstration Week. Mist Jean Childress, home ag ent, gave the lesson on "lining garments." She also had several garments showing the use of lin ings and how they add life to a garment. Kf t. Members of the Blue Bonnet Junior Garden club have been very active this year and have made an execellent record under th- lead ership of Mrs. G. D. Barnett. Chairman, and Mrs. E. 8. Quails, Counselor.. Across the state of North Caro lina there are nearly 400 .voung people engaged in Junior Garden Clubs. These young people are learning through doing, the many phases of horticulture, arranging, civic awareness, antl-litter educa tion, garden therapy, conservation, beautification, etc. that will help them "make the world a better and more beautiful becauae they have | lived in it." Green Valley Club Meets The Green Valley Home Demon stration Club met at the home of Mrs. Jim Hodges at 1:30 p.m. on April 19. Eight members were present besides our Home Demon stration agent, Miss Jean Childers and her assistant, Mrs. Lillian Danner. Mrs. Troy Norris, the club presi dent, called the meeting to order and conducted the devotional. The minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary, Mrs. Conley Church and were approved. Club dues and $12.00 raised by the sale of ovenwares were turned over to Mrs. Minnie Norris, the new treasurer. The club then voted to have the secretary send a note of ap preciation to the former treasurer, Mrs. A. E. Moretz, for her enthusi astic and untiring efforts on behalf of our club in the past. We miss her and hope that her health will permit her to be with us again soon. It was also voted that the women of the Green Valley Club place flowers (on certain spccial days) in the churches of denominations represented in our club. After the business meeting, Miss Childers gave an instructive and interesting demonstration on Inter facings and Interlinlngs. M. Mstheson and Mrs. James Councill at Daniel Boone Hotel Saturday. The hoporees were presented corsages and cook books. Eighteen guests were present. Honored On 70th Birthday i Mrs. Minnie Culver Winn of Elizabethton, Tennessee, was hon ored Sunday it a dinner celebrat ing her seventieth birthday at the home of her niece, Mrs. E. T. Glenn, and Dr. Glenn. The honoree's table was laid with white dinner damask, and ? corsage of pink carnations marked her place. Accents of pink and lavender were carried out at her table and complemented by small tables set up to accomodate the twenty dinner gueats. Birthday caka and punch waa served later in the afternoon when Mrs. Winn's great nieces and nep hews came to ahower her with gifts. DEMOCRAT ADS PAY Worthwhile Club Sees Health Film The Boom Worthwhile Woman's Club met in the Adult Assembly Room of Boone Methodist Church Thursday evening, April 71, wtth Mrs. E. S. Quails. Mrs. John Mor ton, Mrs. Paul Weston, Mrs. L. L. Bingham, Mrs. C. B. Lefenwell, Mrs. B W. Stalling!, and Mrs. Carolyn Whatley Mrs. John Houck, president, pprned the meeting with the col lect and presided at the business session which followed. Highlight of the meeting was * film shown by Mrs Nancy Thomas, assisted by Mis* Dot Baird, both pf the Watauga County Health De partment. The film, title, "The Other City," graphically iiluatrat ing the development and growth of the abnormal cell which pro duces cancer, emphasized the vital importance of early detection through periodic examinations. Prior to the meeting at the Methodist Church a representa tive group of the club members hsd attended a dinner of the Busi ness and Professional Women's Club at Daniel Boone Inn in hon or of Mrs. B. W. Stalling*, whom they selected as their "First Wo man of the Year" for Watauga County. At the social session the hostes ses served dainty decorated cook ies and sandwiches and punch. Before adjourning the president reminded the club members that new officers would be installed at the meeting and asked that an ef fort be made to have 100 per cent attendance. Lenoir Home Parade Is Set The Lenoir Woman's Club is planning a Parade of Homes, May 10 from 10:00 a. m. until 6:00 p. m. Five lovely and interesting homes will be opened in addition to Lenoir's Country Club and the very new Ken-Ham Lodge. There will also be five furniture show rooms open to those making the home tour. Mr. and Mrs. A. Y. Cottrell will have on display their World Tour Collections which they brought back last year from many coun tries. The ladies will serve lunch at the woman's club building from 11:00 ?. m. until 2:00 p. m. for $1.00. Tickets for the tour will be $2.10 and may be secured from any member of the club or at the homes the day of the tour. Auto sales rose slightly in early April.
