Mountaineers Host ??H ???? I ' The Appalachian Mountain eers entertain the league-lead ing Panthers of High Point here on Saturday night in the confer ence headliner. Action will be gin in the Health and Physical Education Building at 8:00. Al though a near capacity crowd is expected, official* do not ex P?et a repeat of laat week's N game with Lenoir Rhyne when over a hundred people were turned away because of crowd ed conditions. High Point has one of the ? finest teams to appear in Boone this season. New coach Tom Quinn took over a squad which finished Second in the confer ence tournament last spring, added a new offense and sever al outstanding freshmen, and currently has one of the hottest teams in the state. The Panthers are led by Phil Garrison, 8-3 Junior who was voted the outstanding player in the conference laat season. Gar rison has the movements of a guard but em work hi the pivot and rebound with the best of the big men. Height is no problem with Bill Fallin (6-7) and Dave Neel (6-9 in the front court. Appalachian's coach Bob Light win counter the High Point attack with a couple of stars of his own. Wayne Duncan at forward and Jack Lytton at guard have developed into two of the league's finest. Duncan is among the leaders in scoring with a 20- point game average and is a top re bouncer. Lytton currently is scoring at a 13.0 average per game, and is con sidered one of the finest out side shooters in the area. * Monday night the Mountain eers host the Pfeiffer Falcons. Beaten by the Light Brigade in their first meeting of the year at Pfeiffer, revenge will be the word for* the Pfeiffer team. Pfeiffer is coached by an Ap palachian graduate, Francis Essie. LR Bears Rout Apps; Wells Paces Attack The Lenoir Rhyne Bears wal loped the Appalachian Moun taineers by the score of 88-49 before a capacity crowd of 2,000 and saw 100 people turned away from the game. This loss was the first for the Mountain eers in Carolinas Conference action and the third loss for the Mountaineers this season. They have won 7 and lost 3 on their overall record. The game was a nip and tuck affair for the entire first half with the Bears of Lenoir Rhyne taking the lead at 20-19 with 4:00 minutes remaining in the first half and they were never behind again in the entire ball game. Due to a cold shooting streak by the Mountaineers in the. second half the Bears were able to turn the game into a rout. Lenoir Rhyne outscored the Apps 47-24 in the second half and were sparked by the fine play of center Jerry Weill in this spurt. The Bears led by as much as 25 points in the sec ond half. Top scorer for the game was the Bears Wells who tallied 22 points and he was followed in the Bears scoring by Ed Mia stkowski with IS and guard Neil McGeachy with 12 points. Appalachian was led by their star forward Wayne Duncan who scored 10 points in a losing cause. Veteran forward Jim Richardson of the Mountaineers was held to no points by the Bears Jim Wiles. These two boys played together while in high school at North Wilkes. The next home game for the Appalachian Mountaineers will be this coming Saturday night against the Purple Panthers from High Point College. AHS Freshman Team Gets 33-23 Win Over CC Raiders By JOHNNIE COE In the first game of a double header with Cove Creek on Saturday night, January 5, at the Cove Creek gym, the Ap palachian High freshman bas ketball team chalked up a vic tory of 33 to 23 over the Red Raiders' freshman team. For several minutes in the first half. Cove Creek held a lead and appeared to be on the road to victory. Late in the half, however, the Blue Devils start ed hitting and during the sec ond half maintained their lead over the Raiders. Milligan had won six straight matches before tangling with the tough Mountaineers. Looking good for Hie Moun taineers were Gary Tiddy and Ed Winterstein. Tiddy was the only Mountaineer to gain a pin for the match. He pinned Milli gan's Oden in a fine match. Winterstein racked up a total of 12 points In his victory over Cerovic. At the end of the third individual match the score was 10-3 in favor of the Milligan team but then the Apps re bounded to win the next five matches in a row and cop the Triplett and Darrell Worth 149.
