BARRON LEE, left, chats with Sylvia Cooper, a senior at
Meredith, and William Smith, B. S. U. secretary of North
Carolina, at a recent statewide meeting. ? Larry Penley photo.
Barron Lee Is Known As
Mr. BSU Of North Carolina
By LARRY PENLEY
Mr. BSU of North Carolina is
none other than Ba.ron Lee oi
Appalachian State Teachers
CoLege.
A native of Lincolnton, Bar
ron said that about all he knew
ibout the Baptist Student Union
when he arrived on the ASTC
:ampus was what he had read
in a letter from an upperclass
inan a few weeks before he
:ame to college.
"My first opportunity to be
some a member of the group
ame when two BSU'ers in
cited me to church and a fresh
nan party for Baptist Students,
rhis was the beginning of my
interest in BSU. My first Sunday
?t Boone Baptist Church I met
i tall husky boy who has prob
ibly had more influence on my
life than any other BSU'fr at
Appalachian. He was president,
ind I thought if only I could ac
quire enough leadership quali
ties and deep enough Christian
faith to take a position like that,
[ would have reached the ut
most in my personal life at col
lege," he said.
Barron declared that the
friendly atmosphere offered by
the local BSU and the encour
agement of the two fine di
rectors who have served here
since he became a member of
BSU has helped to make the
BSU his home at college and
has offered him an opportunity
for Christian worship, service,
study, fellowship, and recrea
tion.
The Lincolnton youth came
to Appalachian as a physical
education major, but as his
interest in BSU increased, he
soon found himself a member
of the Executive Council. Dur
ing his sophomore year, Barron
made his commitment for full
time Christian service. He be
lieves that the ministry the Ap
palachian College BSU offered
him was a large factor in this
decision.
Now Barron is serving his
second term as president of the

local BSU and ia currently serv
ing aa president of the BSU of
North Carolina.
He said, "The BSU was instru
mental in helping me find my
self aa a person, a student, and
most of all, a Christian. Now I
can realize more and more
every day what a great influ
ence BSU has had, and I am
sure, will continue to have on
my life because of the oppor
tunities and responsibilities that
BSU offers me."
As a high school senior, Bar
ron turned down scholarships
at N. C. State and Pfeiffer Col
lege to enroll at Appalachian.
He felt that sometime in the
future he wanted to teach and
that the best place in the State
to get this training was at a
teachers college.
The 21-year-old ministerial
student will travel with other
ASTC student* half way around
the world to attend the sixth
Baptist Youth World Confer
ence in Beirut this summer. The
14,000-mile trip la sponsored
by the BSU of Appalachian Col
lege and will be directed by
Hank Greer and Marshall Har
grave of the Boone Baptist
Church.
Last summer Barron was one
of 260 college students selected
to travel to Africa under a pro
gram entitled "Operation-Cross
roads Africa." This program was
conceived to give students of
high leadership potential a
chance to study and gain in
sight into the culture, folkways,
religion, and family structure of
the African people.
In addition to his religious
snd civic activities on the
Boone campus, be has already
started training for his chosen
profession, the ministry. He at
tended one session of summer
school at Southeastern Baptist
Seminary at Wake Forest Next
fall he plans to enroll there and
work toward the BD degree. He
says that he is interested In
pastoral training and possibly
the mission field.
