Beauty Queen To Boost N. C.
At Ohio Valley Travel Show
Betty Lawhon, who wears the
titles of North Carolina Rho
dodendron Queen and "Miss
Variety Vacationland", will help
tell the State's vacation story
at the Ohio Valley Travel and
Sports Show in Cincinnati Gar
dens March 2-10.
The dark-eyed beauty from
Rutherfordton has just returned
from Washington, D. C, where
she appeared at the North Car
olina Travel Exhibit during the
Washington Automobile Show.
She was named "Miss Variety
Vacationland" by the Travel
Council of North Carolina, Inc.,
at its annual meeting in Dur
ham January 27.
Since winning the beauty
pageant on Roan Mountain dur
ing the 1862 Rhododendron
Festival, Miss Lawhon has
traveled over 6,000 miles in the
Carolinas and other states as a
goodwill ambassador for the
Festival which is sponsored by
the Bakersville Lions Club.
Her appearance at the North
Carolina travel exhibit in Cin
cinnati is sponsored by the
Travel Information Division of
the North Carolina Department
oft Conservation and Develop
ment, which participates in ma
jor travel shows as a part of the
State's promotion of tourism.
This will be the third year
that North Carolina has sent a
travel exhibit to Cincinnati for
the big show which draws over
100,000 people to Cincinnati
Gardens each March.
In addition to the State booth,
presenting North Carolina's va
cation attractions from moun
tains to coast, there will be ex
hibits from Ghost Mountain,

and the Carolinian Hotel at the
Ohio Valley Show.
Lutherans Plan Ground Breaking
The Holy Communion Luther
an Church will hold a ground
breaking service Sunday, March
3, at 4 p. m., on the site of its
proposed parsonage about one
mile east of Foscoe. The Rev.
Dr. E. L. Misenheimer will of
ficiate at the service, represent
ing the Synodical staff of the
North Carolina Synod of the
Lutheran Church of America.
The congregation, which has
been without a pastor for t
year and a half, has extended
a call which has not yet been
accepted. A spokesman for the
group said it is felt by the con
gregation that it is best to pro
ceed with the construction of
the pasonage, so that it will be
completed by the time a new
pastor arrives in the parish.
An invitation was extended
to all friends to join in the
ground breaking ceremonies.
The inviation was also extended
to friends to join in the morn
ing worship service, and to re
ceive the Lord's Supper with
them, so long as they will accept
it in their faith.

of Agriculture estimates week
ly food costs for couples 20 to
34 years of age at $21.60, and
for couples 55 through 74 at
$19.40 a week.

ties have told Gov. Terry San
ford they will be on hand for
a spectacular "recognition cere
mony" which the state has
planned for April 28 during the
1963 North Carolina Interna
tional Trade Fair.
Hargrove Bowles, Jr., chair
man of the State's Department
of Conservation and Develop
ment sponsoring the Trade Fair,
said other acceptances are on
the way. He listed the first
three as:
Edward R. Murrow, distin
guished news analyst, TV per
sonality, and now chief of the
U. S. Information Agency.
Betty Johnson, songstress and
entertainer who has made fre
quent appearances on many of
the nation's top-rated television
shows; and
Sidney Blackmer, veteran ac
tor with more than 100 movies,
29 Broadway plays, and count
less TV star roles to his credit.
4-H Achievement
Night To Be Held
At Cove Creek
The annual 4-H Club Achieve
ment Night will be held next
Thursday night, March 7, at
7:30 in the Cove Creek High
School Gymnasium. This event
will include awarding medals
and certificates to all county
winners of project work. Mr.
Dick Smith, Western District
4-H Club Agent, will speak on
"Opportunities in Community
4-H Club Work." Several inter
esting entertainment features
are in the making.
All club members, parents,
leaders, and everyone interested
in 4-H Club work are urged to
attend what is planned to be a
most interesting meeting.
