Let Junior Play Pool; It's Respectable Now By JOHN COREY Socially speaking, the status of pool U rising. This is good. Pool is an excellent game of skill, but for years it was pub licly ostracized because of the environment in which billiards was often played. The image of the billiards hall was that of a hangout for drinkers, smokers, loafers, and gamblers. The "praenee of a pool table in your community" no longer has "the caliber of disaster," as Meredith Willson's Music Man says. In fact, the pool table ap pears to be taking a place be side the ping-pong table or chess beard so far as wbolesome nets is concerned. Wise parents and youth lead ers reoogaiae that peel appeals to young people, that it will draw many of then regardleea of the surroundings. As an out let for youthful energy and the competitive urge, it certainly ranks with bowling and claims AS JLB GtflrfC Washington used to shoot with Alexander Hamilton and Tho mas Jefferson. In recent years more and more' homes have installed min iature or even full-sized tables. The same is true of recreation rooms in churches and schools, although the invasion here has been cautious. The old "brass spittoon" era of the commercial pool hall is fast giving way to respectable pocket billiard salons with "wall-to-wall carpeting, pastel walls, background music, and tables covered with blue, beige, gold, or tangerine cloth instead ' of hte traditional green." J Not every local .pool hall has face-Hfted. Bat out of- date are city ordinances prohibiting a | MBlarda hall faoai faeiag amain street or having a glass front. Like modern bowling lanes, the new billiard parlor is being purified as ? recreation center and opened to everyone, even women and children. This any there* nothing to hide. It tlmm that pool shoot ing, in the proper environment, as the fun-type gam* it is. Civic and school officials and parents should press lor this change wherever local pool balls fail to face-lift. The po&fible remit: Junior could, instead of slip ping off to (boot pool, say with pride and honoaty to bis par enti: "My date and I are going t? the pocket bilLard talon tonight We're going to put into practice some of the geometry and phy sics we've been learning about in sdhool." Respectable Game Pool Mrt billiards an t fames of fun ud skill WukiasteQ, Hamilton and Jefferson once played them together.
