ASTC Band, Choir To Appear In Concert Thursday Night ? A concert by the Appalach ian State teacher* College Band and the College Choir will be held on the campus Nov. 14 at 8 p. m. In the Fine Art! Auditorium, according to an nouncement by Dr. William Spencer, chairman of the music department. This concert combines the efforts of the Concert Band un der the . direction of Charles Is ley and College Choir, under the direction of Virginia Wary Linney. A special feature of the con cert will be the performance of Dr. Martin Mailman's composi tion for band, chorus and nar rator, "Leaves of Grass," which was written in commemoration of the Tercentenary Celebration of North Carolina. Dr. Mailman, composer-in-residence at East Carolina College, will be the guest conductor. Mr. David Hodgin of the English Depart ment at Appalachian, will be the narrator for the perform ance. Dr. Mailman was recently one of the young composers sponsored by the Ford Founda tion. He is rapidly becoming known throughout the United States as a composer of note. He is under exclusive contract with the Mills Music Company, which has published a number of his works, including "Alle luia" for band and chorus; "Au tumn Landscape" for orches tra; and an opera, "The Hunt ed," which was performed at the 1998 Festival of American Music. He holds the Bachelor of Music, Master of Music and Ph.D. degrees from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N. Parkway Travel Shows Increase The monthly visitor report of the Blue Ridge Parkway shows that 1,014,190 visited on the scenic route during the month of October.
