Two hundred couples were in vited. Anyway the story says: Mr. and Mrs William Holt Williamson III will give a dance Friday from a p. m. to 1 a. m. at Charlotte Country Club. The party will honor Dr. and Mr*. Charles Hal Chaplin and Dr. and Mrs. Orion Townsend Finklea. Dr. and Mr?. Chaplin moved here in September from Phila delphia, Pa., and are living at 1129 Granville Road. She if the former Anne Miller of Lincoln ton, and he is originally from Columbia, N. C. Mrs. William son and Mn Chaplin were roommates at Salem College for four years. The Flnkleas moved here from Iowa City, Iowa, in Au gust and are living at 1606 Per nell Ct. Mrs. Finklea is the former Jimmie Rivers of Ra leigh, and Dr. Finklea is from Florence, S. C. The doctors are both gradu ates of the University of North Carolina and are Phi Gamma Delta fraternity brothers. Before the dance Mr. and Mrs. Williamson will give a dinner at the club for the honorees and out-of-town guests attending the party. Fresh Apple Cake CREAM: S eggs Itt cup Wesson oil 2 cups sugar. ADD:. 3 cups cake flour 1 teaspoon soda ? Vi teaspoon salt 1 teaqjpea .wnftb, I cup broken pecau meats. 3 cups chopped raw apples. MIX THOROUGHLY (very stiff mixture). Pour into a greased and floured loaf or tube pan and hake in a 380 degree oven for 1 hour 18 minutes. ICING: I (tick margarine 1 cup brown sugar % cup evaporated milk Cook about 2Vi minutes. Pour over the cak while both are hot. Black walnuts are a delicious substitute for pecan meats. Love, MOM November 11, 1963. Rhododendron Garden Club Mrs. Grace Mast presided at the November meeting of the Rhododendron Garden Club which met at the home of Mrs. Robert Broome. The certificate of honor, won by the club for their achieve ments, was shown to the group and given to Mrs. Mary High to put in the club scrap book. Mrs. Mast commended a group headed by Mrs. Ressie Smith, for the flower arrange ments prepared for various homecoming activities. Mrs. Elizabeth King intro duced Mrs. Paul Graff who gave the program on "Conservation of Our Birds." She said we have 406 species listed in North Carolina. Migration and habits of birds were discussed at length. Instructions were given for the care and protection of local species. Mrs. Graff, who is conserva tion chairman of the Blue Ridge Garden Club, is greatly con cerned about such enemies as insecticides, fogging machines, etc. She used Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" as a reference. She showed how dependent we are on birds and how poor we would feel in our gardens without them. During the social hour Mrs. Broome served pumpkin chif fon pie and coffee. Jr. Woman's Club Meets Thursday The regular monthly meeting of the Boone Junior Womin'i Club wai held Thursday even ing in the home of Mn. Paul Branch on Poplar Hill Drive. Mrs. Lola Miller was co-hostess. The program topic, Christ mas Ideas, was presented by the members. Each member brought some type of decoration she had used, displayed the item, and told how it was made. Some contributed recipes and samp les of the goodies, all appropri ate for the Christmas season. Attending the meeting as guests were Mrs. Frank Auton, Mrs. Dempsey Wilcox, Jr., and Watauga Council Garden Clubg The Watauga Council of Oar den Club* met at the home of Mrs. J. H. Winkler at 8 p. m. Wednesday, November S. Mn. H. W. Wilcox, president, pre sided. Plans for the coming lily show, sponsored by the North Carolina Lily Society were dis cussed. Mrs. B. W. Stallings and Mrs. H. M. Cooke announc ed that they would attend a planning meeting of a commit tee for the lily show in Dur ham, and they invited any club members who could attend to go with them. Plans for the Christmas de coration project were discussed. The program, which was for merly a project of the Boone Junior Woman's Club, has been transferred to the Garden Coun cil, with Mrs. John Hollars, chairman. Mrs. Wilcox appointed a no minating committee consisting of Mrs. Max Dixon, Mrs. Bert Ellis and Mrs. Charles Isley. Ray. president, conducted a brief business ses sion, during which the club voted to assist a local school student as a welfare project. Plans were made to honor the Appalachian Elementary School faculty during American Education Week, November 1046. This has been a club pro ject for a number of years. Discussion was held concern ing the organization of a local Humane Society, affiliated with the national organization. Defi nite action was postponed, pending further information. It was announced that the an nual Christmas party for mem bers and husbands will be Thursday evening, December 5th, at 7 in the home of Mrs. J. D. Shoemake, club sponsor. Committee assignments were completed for the arrange ments. At the conclusion of the meeting, the hostesses served a delicious dessert course. Timbered Ridge Club The Timbered Ridge Commun ity Club met Friday.
