Friday, May 8 was the date of the election of the President and Vice President of the Stu dent Council for the coming year. 'w,/’ Bill Baird, the retiring Vice President, was elected as President. Bill has served in Student Council for two years. He serves as President of the junior dess and was chosen as the junior superlative “Best All Round*’. The Vice President was de termined in a run-off Monday. Rebecca Wilson was elected to serve. Rebecca has been her homeroom President for foe past two years. The sophomore class elected her to serve as class President. A member of the varsity cheerleaders squad for the past two years, she was the captain this year. Visitation Day On Thursday, May 7, as port of the orientation program for next year’s incoming students, eighth graders from Mabel, Valle Cruets, and Cove Creek Elenlentary Schools were in vited to visit in the high school for tiie day. They visited: dif ferent classes, looked oveir the buildings aiid campus. At an assembly program they were introduced to the student body and faculty, And a pro gram planned by the National Honor Society, was presented which explained some of the various activities of the high school program in training for balanced living. Some of the problems that arise and the opportunities given for helping students take responsibility for handling their own -problems was emphasized by two brief playlets-— “IQ High-Ambition Low”, and the other “Bus Be havior”. MORETZ 'Sari Antonio, Tex. — Airman James L. Moretz, son of Mr. and Mrs. <Jones M- Moretz of Rt. 1, Boone, N. C., has completed the first phase of his Air Force basic military training at Lack land AFB, Texas. Airman Moretz has been se lected for technical training as ah aircraft equipment repair man at the Air Training Com-, mand (ATC) school at Chariute AFB, 111. His new unit is part of the vast ATC system which trains airmen and officers in the diverse skills required by the nation’s aerospace force. The airman is a 1960 gradu ate of Appalachian High School. BLACKBURN ARRIVES FOR DUTY IN KOREA Osan-Ni, Korea — Staff Ser geant Eugene S. Blackburn, son of Earl S. Blackburn of Poplar Hill Drive, Boone, N. C., has ar rived for duty with a unit of the Pacific Air Force (PACAF) at Osari AB, Korea. Sergeaht Blackburn, an intel ligence specialist, previously served at Little Rock AFB, Ark. His new unit supports the PA CAF mission of providing air power for defense of the U. S. and its allies in the Pacific area. The sergeant’s wife, Murel, is the daughter of Mrs. Effis S. C», participated as a member of the guerrilla forces in Exer cise WEST BEND, a joint Army Navy-Marine Corps amphibious operation, on the Hawaiian Is land of Molokai April 15-24. Sergeant Younce, in Hawaii since November 1960 on this tour of duty, is regularly sta tioned at Schofield Barracks as a .platoon sergeant in Company A of the division’s 65th Engi neer Battalion. The 194? Cove Creek High School graduate entered the Army in February 1955. His wife, Mituse, is with him in Hawaii. CARROLL COMPLETES Dental training Montgomery, Ala. — Staff Sergeant Amos D. Carroll, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil W. Car* roll of Triplett, N. C., has graduated from the training course for U. S. Air Force den tal laboratory technicians at Gunter AFB, Ala. Sergeant Carroll, trained to supervise the clinical phases of dentistry, is being assigned to the tactical hospital at England AFB, La.. His unit furnishes medical services in support of the Tactical Air Command mis sion of providing firepower and other air support to U. S. Army forces. The sergeant, a graduate of Kings Creek (N. C.) High School, entered the Air Force in June 1051. His wife, Joyce, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Glitz of Milwaukee, Wis. might become acquainted with the larger class of ninth grad ers they will become a part of next year.
