To Appear At
Mars Hill Clinic
Mare Hill-—If the weather
cooperates, the Music Depart
ment of Mars Hill College will
hold its 17th annual choral
clinic for high school students
here Friday and Saturday (Feb.
11-12).
Approximately 300 singers
from 36 schools—most of them
in the western half of the "state,
a few in South Caroling and
Tennessee—have accepted in
vitations. In most instances six'
to eight students will attend
accompanied by their , school’s
glee club director' or music
teacher.

Snow has fallen on the cam
pus the last thrhe weekends
and the weather outlook for
this coming weekend is uncer
tain, but Elwood Roberts, co
ordinator of the workshop, is

two-day instruction - rehearsal
program. ’

Watauga Red Cross Official
Says Many Workers Heeded
The American' Red Cross is
increasing its military installa
tions and hospital staffs to
match U. S. military build-ups.
Representatives from South
eastern Area headquarters in
Atlanta will be in Charlotte
Feb. 24 and 25 to interview
persons interested in employ
ment, Mrs. Fletcher, Watauga
Chapter executive, reports.
The most urgent need, Mrs.
Fletcher said, it for assistant
field directors on U. S. military
installations. Also needed are
young women, for the organiza
tion’s clubmobile' program in
Viet Nam and Korea, and as
social workers and recreation
workers in stateside and over
seas military hospitals.
Mrs. Fletcher said men, ages
25 to 45, who like to ‘work
with people, are wap ted for; as
Escaped Convicts
Caught During Storm
Two escaped convicts from
the prison camp at Yadkinville,
and a girl were arrested in
Boone, Monday, Jan. 31, by
Watauga Deputy Sheriff Ed
Harmon and a. guard from the
local prison unit. The men were
charged with taking money and
goods from a local enterprise.
Sheriff Dallas Cheek said
Miss Gail Butler, 17, of White
Oak, N. C., suffered frozen
hands and feet when the car in
which she was riding with the
convicts stalled. She was hosp
italized in Boone and later re
leased, he said;
Watauga officers said the
temperature was 18 degrees be
low zero the night of Jan. 30,
when Claude Hollars, 21, of
Boone, and Gary Wood, 21, of
Route 1, White Oak, fled from
their car. The 1965 Ford, iden
tified as the property of a
Jonesville, N. C„ resident, stall
ed in a snowdrift.
The Sheriff said Miss Butler,
Wood’s girl friend, walked with

also, is a 1963 graduate of Ap
palachian High.
ASC Signup Is Extended
The County ASC Committee
has extended the Special ACP
initial signup through Feb. 25,
according to Clint Eggers, chair
man of the Watauga ASC Coun
ty Committee. Due to the ex
treme weather conditions many
farmers have been unable to
complete plans and make re-,
quests for costsharing under
the 1966 Agricultural Conserva
tion Program.
The County . Committee, has
requested and had approved a
special practice for tree plant
ing. Up to 10 acres of tree
planting will be approved on a
farm in addition to the regular
farm payment for 1966. The
per acre payment by the gov
ernment for tree planting is
$14 per acre.
Gone 28 Years
Chicago—Mrs. Julia Michuda
has given up hope that her
husband will return. He left 28
years ago after a family quar
rel. The 60-year-old woman de
cided she had waited long
enough and got a divorce.

Hollars was serving three to
five years for breaking and en
tering and larceny, Cheek said,
and was sentenced in Watauga
County. Both have been taken
back to Yadkinville and return
ed to work, according to prison
officials.
Yadkinville officials did say
escape charges will be brought
by the Superior Court.
Sheriff Cheek said money and
goods stolen from the Hill Top
Grocery, Highway 421 West,
Sunday night, Jan. 30, have
been partially recovered and
that Wood and Hollars have
been charged with breaking
and entering, and Miss Butler
with aiding and abetting.
