Says Ministers
Should Check On
S. S. Coverage /
“Many area clergyman have
an important decision to make
by April IS,” Don W. Marsh,
social security district manager
in Hickory, said today, j
The 1965 amendments to Die
social security law gave 'clergy
men who had missed out on
previous opportunities to sign
up for social security coverage
another chance to felect this
protection. Now this latest
“open season” provided by law
is about to run out,'he said.
“I urge clergymen who have
any doubts about'their present
coverage or questions about
coverage for past or for future
years to get in-touch with their
social security office without
delay. The time is short. And
much may / be at stake for
clergymen / and their depend
ents,” the district manager
said.

ECHOES OF THE BLUE BWCE
l*M*
antes Are Lauded
BY HERMAN W. WILCOX
I am afraid we often fail to
express our appreciation for
those who help us. I have yet
to call on our fine power sys
tems without receiving hund
red percent cooperation in our
many puplic projects.
$S,5M Per Year
The superintendent of New
H.W. WILCOX
cuver Ligni
and Power
Company, Mr.
Grant Ayers,
gives an esti

of cost for ser
vices and pow
er used by
Christmas Dec
orations, Wag
on Train, hang
ing Horn signs, traffic control,
tree trimming, pole moving and
service entrances, to be $6,500
per year. For Christmas decora
tions only, the cost for labor,
and free power $1,400. Two
years ago when the Wagon
Train camped on the property
of Gordon H. Winkler and
Horn in the West grounds, we
needed lights. New River set
poles to the camp site, furnish
ed street lights and power at
no cost to us.
Power System Growing
1946, New River Light and
Power Company had 802
customers, 1,647,973 KWHRS
were consumed.
1966, 2700 customers, broken
down, Industrial 15, Business
370, balance non industrial and
business. 30,000,000 KWHRS
were consumed. They have had
4 reductions of rates. We are
most grateful to these fine
people for assisting our town
to grow, and lending a hand to
our worthwhile projects.
Congressman Broyhill
An excerpt from a letter
March 28 from our Congress
man James T. Broyhill is self
explanatory:
