They spent Thursday in Rock Hill where they went on the tour of homes and gardens, sponsored by the American Association of University Women. Mrs. Idol accompanied her mother on her return to Boone Saturday, and spent the weekend, returning to Clemson Monday. Miss Dayis Is Bride of Mr. Bridges MRS. JAMES WILMER BRIDGES, JR. In a 4 p. m. ceremony Satur Jay, April 9, Miss Jackie Mad elyn Davis of Horn in the West Drive became the bride of Mr. James Wilmer Bridges, Jr., of Union Mills, N. C. The wedding was perfromed in the Boone Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Crowder. Mrs. Bridges is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack D. Davis of Boone, and Mr. Bridges is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Wil mer Bridges, Route 2, Union Mills. Mrs. Orus Sutton was organist and Miss Janie Cranford, soloist. Miss Cranford sang “O Perfect Love” and “Wedding Prayer.” The bride’s father gave her away. The bride wore a short dress with white satin bodice, sweet heart neckline with long sleeves gathered at the wrist. It was a full skirt gathered in tucks with seed pearls. Her veil was shoulder length, attached to a crown oi lace mamma. &ne car raied a white satin Bible and wore a corsage of white carna tions. Her maid of honor was a college classmate, Miss Cathy Hall. Miss Hall wore a dress of mint green with matching headpiece and a corsage of yel low carnations. Mr. Bill Simpson of Union Mills served as best man. Mr. Rickie Davis, brother of the bride, was usher. Following the wedding, a re ception was held at the home of the bride’s parents. The table was overlaid with a lace cloth made by the bride’s maternal grandmother. The centerpiece was of Boston daisies and brass candelabra. Assisting at the reception were Mrs. Scott A. Tolley, Fair fax, Va., Miss Cathy Hall and Miss Janie Cranford. Mrs. Bridges was graduated from Fayetteville Senior High School, Fayetteville. She is a senior at Appalachian State Teachers College. Jaycettes Elect New Officer Slate The Boone Jaycettes met Monday, April 11 at the home of the hostess, Mrs. Pat Hal shouser. Mrs. Anna Boyce Phil lips was co-hostess. Reports were given from the various officers of the club. A committee was appointed to be in charge of table decorations for the upcoming installation of officers for the Jaycees May 2. The nomination committee made its report, and a slate of officers were submitted for the election. The following officers were elected: President, Betty Hegler, 1st vice-president, Max ine Trivette; 2nd vice-presi dent, Betty McFarland; secre iaiy, rai nuuges, puunuiiy chairman, Martha Hester; board of directors, Wilma Ragan, Phyllis Templeton, and Carolyn Austin. Following the business ses sion, delicious refreshments were served to the 28 members present. Turner of Greensboro. Miss Critcher is a graduate of Appalachian High School, and is now a freshman at Ap palachian State Teachers Col lege. Mr. Turner is a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, and will receive his Masters Degree in August. In September, he will report to Pensacola, Fla., where he will begin training in the Naval Aviation Officers Program. An early summer wedding, at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone, is planned. Thomas Carlton Will Appear In Voice Recital Thomas D. Carlton, bass, will be presented by the ASTC Mus ic Department in senior voice recital, Friday, April 22, at 8 p. m. in the I. G. Greer Audi torium. Mr. Carlton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas D. Carlton of Lenoir, and is a major in busi ness and economics. He is a student of Mrs. Vir ginia Wary Linney, professor of music at ASTC. Accompanist for his recital is Miss Doris Prevatte, a senior piano major. During his four years at ASTC Tom has been a member of the College Choir and has appeared as bass soloist in the annual production of Handel’s Messiah, and The Elijah by Mendelssohn given as a special feature in the 19^*5 Arts Festi val. He has appeared frequent ly as a soloist at the Methodist church, has entertained for various civic organizations, and has sung in the chorus of the “Horn in the West”. Mrs. Frank McCracken, depart ment chairman, presided over the business session. The min utes were read by Mrs. Boy flufty in the absence of Mrs. Homer Brown, secretary. Mrs. Maude Carroll and Mrs. Mar garet Winters were welcomed as new members. Mrs. Mae Miller discussed the plans for garden beautification and Mrs. Herman Wilcox and Mrs. Boy Bufty were appointed to work with Mrs. Miller on this project The general meeting of the club will be held Friday, April 29, in the home of Mrs. P. H. Vance, Sr. Mrs. L. L. Bingham present ed a most delightful and timely program on “The Bewards of Family Life Gardening”. She mentioned a number of anci ent gardens which began as family projects but grew into public gardens; among them the Gardens of Eden, Baby lonia, Zoar and Malmaison. Modern gardens, both formal and informal, were described, and the Brookgreen Garden near Charleston, S. C. and the restored colonial gardens of Williamsburg, Va., along with several others in our own land, were described. Mrs. Bingham also stated, vv tuning lugeuier in garaen ing as a family project brings appropriate rewards to child ren, parents, and to senior members of the group. Miss Southard To Appear In Voice Recital iL:,. . ,mm MISS SLYVIA SOUTHARD Miss Sylvia Southard, student of Mrs. Virginia Wary Liney, will present her graduate voice recital Sunday, April 24, at 3 p. m. in the auditorium of I. G. Greer HaU on the campus of Appalachian State Teachers College. Miss Southard is the daugh ter of Dr. and Mrs. Orby South ard of Dahlonega, Ga., former residents of Boone. Having earned a bachelor of music de gree from Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. Miss Southard is a graduate assistant in the Music Department at Appalachian. She is a member of the Ap palachian College Choir and was soprano soloist in the an nual production of the Messiah. In addition, she is an affiliate member of the National As sociation of Teachers of Sing ing, Music Educators National Conference, and Sigma Alpha Iota, national honorary music fraternity. Vocal numbers by Scarlatti, Monteverdi, Schubert, Poulenc, Debussy and Dello Joio are in cluded in the program. Miss Robin Loworn, a member of the Appalachian piano faculty, will accompany Miss Southard. The public is invited to attend. rs. Mrs. Greene Hostess To Brushy Fork Club Mrs. Clay Verne Greene was hostess to the Brushy Fork Home Demonstration Club at her home Friday, April 15, at 7:30 p. m. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. Bennie Baird. For devotion each member repeated a Bible verse, and Mrs. Robert Watson led the prayer. The song for the month, “All Creatures”, was read by Mrs. Eddie Norris. The following project re ports were given: Cooking, Miss Maude Perry; health, Mrs. Bennie Baird; household hints, Mrs. Ralph Wilson and Mrs. June Baird. Mrs. Howard Dancey talked an insurance. Mrs. Greene served dessert to 16 members and three visi tors, Mrs. Vaughn Roten, Ricky and Betty Greene.
