Know The
Weather
BY E. H. SIMS
Po high radio and television
(toners have a tendency jo draw
lightning and thereby lessen
file danger tp lower structures
ppd nearby trees?
Yes, high metal towers will
pften draw electrical discharges
from clouds passing low over
head. So will especially tall
bui}dipgs. Since the electrical
pharges of clouds are attracted
by the nearness of high
grounds, like transmission tow
ins, these towers often pull the
lightning that would otherwise
discharge later, elsewhere.
If you live in the vicinity of
very tall buildings or high metal
lowers, these structures will act
as the old lightning rods were
supposed to — draw the iight
ping and ground it harmlessly.
The tendency of these tall
towers to pttrgct Jighjnjpg is
recognized to an extent that
builders install special light
ning devices tp carry off the
frequent bolts that strike them,
fn a lightning storm, then, stay
gway from such structures, tall
trees and any other tall ob
jects which might suddenly be
come 'a'ground for electrical"
discharge from tee clouds.
