Gragg assembled Sunday for the first time in 30 years to honor their mother with a buffet dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Gragg, Orchard Street. The family later gathered at Mrs. Gragg’s home where she opened many lovely gifts given | in honor of her 77th birthday which she celebrated May 13. Attending the buffet were Mr. and Mrs. Hoy H. The chairman, Mrs. G. C. Greene Sr., presided. The rummage sale was brought up and those who had not turned in their donation were asked to take their things in early Friday morning. Mrs. Gene Reese was wel comed as a new member after which Mrs. Sho.imake, pro gram chairman, introduced the speaker who was one of the members, Mrs. John G. Barden. Mrs. Barden spoke on reli gions of the world most cap ably having lived in central Africa for several years and observed several different re ligions in action. In addition to Christian re ligions, there are ten other liv ing and growing religions in the world: The non-Christiah religions being in the majority. She spoke of ecumenical ex perimentation around the world. Perhaps the most sweep ing of proposed mergers is one which would unite about 23 million U. S. Protestants. The connultation on Church Union was held in Dallas, Texas May 2-5 to consider an outline for a plan of union. She quoted from the Club Collect . . . “it is the little things that create differences, that in the big things of life we are as one.” Today many religions exist which are alike in certain ways and unlike in others. The Christian religion is distinctive ly different because of Jesus Christ. Mrs. Barden told of a number of changed lives be cause of the Christian religion which she has known in centr al Africia where she and Dr. Barden taught for a number of years. She also showed interest ing curious from different parts of the world, particularly Africa, the Orient and Latin America. Some of the items were of special religious signi ficance. A general discussion followed. The hostess served cake with strawberries and coffee during a social hour. Clubwomen To Have Rummage Sale The Worthwhile Woman’s Club, Inc., will conduct another rummage sale Friday from 1 to 4 p. m. and on Saturday, 8 a. m. to 4 p. m. Mrs. Lee Reynolds says the sale will be held in the Hunt’s Department Store building, East King Street. Psychiatrist calls Americans “most worried.” Lyric Soprano Sets Recital MISS BARBARA HOLMES Miss Barbara Allen Holmes of Fayetteville will be present ed in graduate recital by the ASTC Music Department, Wed nesday, May 18, at 8 p. m. in the I. G. Greer Recital Hall. She will be accompanied by Mr. Walton Cole. Miss Holmes, a graduate of Methodist College of Fayette ville, is a graduate student in music at ASTC. Miss Holmes, a lyric soprano, has appeared as soloist in ora torio presentations, concert opera programs, recitals and choral works. She has sung in oratorio choruses, church choirs, and musical productions. She is a student of Mrs. Vir ginia Wary Linney, and a for mer student of Mr. Alan Port er and Mr. Otis Lambert in voice and Mrs. Jean Ishee in piano and organ. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Allen Holmes of Fayetteville. Jaycettes Guests Of Mrs. Mark Hodges The monthly meeting of the Boone Jaycettes was held on Monday evening, May 9 at the home of Mrs. Mark Hodges, hostess, on Poplar Hill. Mrs. Paul Smith and Mrs. Phil Templeton were co-hostesses. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. Jim Hegler and the program was turned over to Mrs. Bob McFarland who introduced Dr. John Van Noppen. Dr. Van Noppen spoke to the club about the research he and his wife, Dr. Ina Van Noppen, had done in England, Ireland, Scotland and North Carolina on Daniel Boone’s ancestory. This research is for the book they have written. He later showed and explained slides taken on tours which he has conducted in Europe. The pro gram was of particular interest to all members because of Dan iel Boone’s historical signific ance in this area. After the program, Mrs. Mark Hodges, secretary, read the minutes, Mrs. Jerry Moretz, treasurer gave the financial re port, and various business mat ters of the coming year were discussed. After the program, refresh ments were enjoyed by 24 mem bers and four guests present.
