World Religions Topic
Worthwhile dub
A program on eleven living
religions was delivered to the
Literature and Education divi
sion of the Worthwhile Wo
man’s Club of Boone which met
May 5 with Mrs. Rika Shoe
make. The chairman, Mrs. G.
C. Greene Sr., presided.
The rummage sale was
brought up and those who had
not turned in their donation
were asked to take their things
in early Friday morning.
Mrs. Gene Reese was wel
comed as a new member after
which Mrs. Sho.imake, pro
gram chairman, introduced the
speaker who was one of the
members, Mrs. John G. Barden.
Mrs. Barden spoke on reli
gions of the world most cap
ably having lived in central
Africa for several years and
observed several different re
ligions in action.
In addition to Christian re
ligions, there are ten other liv
ing and growing religions in
the world: The non-Christiah
religions being in the majority.
She spoke of ecumenical ex
perimentation around the
world. Perhaps the most sweep
ing of proposed mergers is one
which would unite about 23
million U. S. Protestants. The
connultation on Church Union
was held in Dallas, Texas May
2-5 to consider an outline for
a plan of union. She quoted
from the Club Collect . . . “it
is the little things that create
differences, that in the big
things of life we are as one.”
Today many religions exist
which are alike in certain
ways and unlike in others. The
Christian religion is distinctive
ly different because of Jesus
Christ. Mrs. Barden told of a
number of changed lives be
cause of the Christian religion
which she has known in centr
al Africia where she and Dr.
Barden taught for a number of
years. She also showed interest
ing curious from different parts
of the world, particularly
Africa, the Orient and Latin
America. Some of the items
were of special religious signi
ficance. A general discussion
followed.
The hostess served cake with
strawberries and coffee during
a social hour.
