ECHOES OF THE BLVE RIDGE
Writer Says Watauga Has
Noted Religious Heritage
BY HERMAN W. WILCOX
Watauga County enjoys a
great religious heritage. This
Thanksgiving Day we ought to
thank our Lord Jesus Christ
for a people who are trying to
advance the Gospel.
Great Spiritual Message
“Horn in the West" is a

I Church of
H. W. WILCOX England when
they tried to
force the “Church of England”
on the people of the new
country.
Dr. Cecil Sherman Speaks
The pastor of the First Bap
tist Church, Asheville, N. C-,
Cecil E. Sherman, attended the
drama last summer, and has
this to say—“Dear Mr. Wil
cox: I have seen a number of
outdoor dramas—dramas with
a historical background. “Horn
in the West” is superior to
any I have seen.
“For a number of years I
have studied Baptist begin
nings in North Carolina. ‘Horn
in the West’ catches the spirit
of that people’s movement,
ties the movement effectively
with the struggle for Ameri
can Independence and all is
done in good taste and high
drama.
“Thank you for popular
izing the story that needs to
be told and I hope that it
prospers so that others may
come to know and appreciate
our common heritage.”
The Baptists have 45 of the
county’s 75 churches. This is
an average of one church for
about every 240 people. Dur
ing the westward movement
of our people trying to escape
the British, many Baptists
paid with their lives during
the late 18th Century for the
freedom we now enjoy.
Cecil Sherman in his re
search has uncovered some
interesting facts regarding the
Church of England, called the
Episcopal Church, or the
Church of England. This, the
Anglican Church, was estab
lished in America in 1607 at
Jamestown. “The Church of
England was formally estab
lished in 1619 when the Vir
ginia legislature made some
financial provisions for the
maintenance of an Anglican
Ministry.” So in the new na
tion, as it was in England,
this church became supported
by the government. Every per
son was taxed for the support
of this church which was cre
ated in 1619.
May 1, 1771—Bowling
Green, Virginia
It might be well if we took
a look at what actually hap
pened at Bowling Green, Va.,
in 1771. John Waller, Baptist
preacher, was interrupted in
his service May 1 by the par
son of the “State Church”.
The parson stepped upon the
platform with Waller, who was
leading the singing, and flip
ped the pages of the hymn
book with his whip.
Waller, who (three years
earlier) had spent 43 days in
jail for preaching, tried to

ignore the interruption. He
continued the service by lead
ing the group in prayer. Dur
ing the prayer, the parson re
pe^edly stuck the putt of his
whip in Waller’s mouth. Then
the county clerk joined the
parson and together they seiz
ed Waller, dragged him from
the pulpit, and turned him
over to the sheriff, who was
standing at the edge of the
crowd. After the sheriff had
given the preacher about 20
lashes with his horsewhip.
Waller, who was covered with

and preached one of his most
powerful messages.
Thanksgiving or Thanksliving?
It’s time to take stock of
ourselves and see if we really
are ready to celebrate this
Thanksgiving. Maurice Coop
er, in his wonderful message
last Sunday, remarked that
it’s time for us to not only be
thankful, but we should live
a Thanksliving life. I am
proud to be an American;
how about you?
