CITY CEMETERY.
Gravestones Have Names
Of Old Families, Strangers
It used to be a long walk
from Boone to the city ceme
tery.
From time to time, families
would spend the afternoon
caring for the graves, using
pumice stone to etch away the
lichen on the weathered tomb
stones and markers.
Some of the plots would be
reseeded, and children would
gather flowers from the fields
to leave in honor of a storied
ancestor.
There are those who say
three Federal soldiers are
buried here. Some say they
died of measels. Others say
they fell during the tumult of
Stoneman’s Raid.
Monuments bear names
familiar to this area: Wilcox,
Hardin. Todd, Farthing, Cot
trell, Greene, Dougherty, Wat
son, Councill, Winkler, Mor
etz, Gre^r, . Rankin, Rivers,
Beach, Hagaman, Bingham,
Critcher, Cook. Members of
these families, and others,
were instrumental in building
up the area.
Some graves have no mark
ers.
Strangers to this country
are buried here too: Rita
Sheridan, aged 21 years, died
November, 1908. The marker
says “Erected by Professional
Friends.” Miss Sheridan was
with a circus which opened in
Boone, when she became ill.
Here, too, is the grave of
John Preston Arthur (1851
1916), historian and poet who
wrote the “History of Watauga
County.”
The memory of loved ones
is honored regularly. Visitors
to city cemetery leave flowers
in evidence of their loyalty
I
and faith.
From the crest of the hill,
a residential, educational and
business complex is viewed.
City cemetery now lies in the
center of town. It’s gates open
in front of the Presbyterian
Church, and the sounds of
passing trucks drift into the
soleumn yard.
One of the markers bears a
single quote: Call This Not
Death But Life.
Head For New Post
President Johnson has an
nounced he will nominate
Alan S. Boyd to head the new
Cabinet - level Department of
Transportation when Congress
convenes in January. At the
present time, Boyd is under
secretary of commerce for
transportation.
