Deaths Mrs. Amanda Hayes Services were held Satur day, Nov. 19, at Aaron Baptist Church, Montezuma, for Mrs. Amanda Alverta Hayes, 77, of that city. Mrs. Hayes was born in Watauga County to Thomas Bingham and Laura Combs Bingham. She died Thursday, Nov. 17, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk. Surviving are three sons: Ernest Hayes of Lenoir, John Hayes of Montezuma and the Rev. Elliott Hayes of Stuart, Va.; four daughters, Mrs. Thelma Kincaid of Raleigh, Mrs. Bonnie Clark of Monte zuma, Mrs. Ruby Childers of Lenoir and Mrs. Isabelle Bras well, Lexington; a sister, Mrs. Joe McNeil of Vilas; and 22 grandchildren and 24 great great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hayes was an aunt of Mrs. Mabel Brown of Boone. Burial after the 2 p. m. ser vices was in the city ceme tery, Montezuma. Walter L. Lenoir Lenoir — Walter Lynch Le noir, 69, of Lenoir, president of Lenoir Hardware and Fur niture Co., died Tuesday night, Nov. 15, in a local hospital. He was born in Lenoir to Mayor Walter James and Hat tie Horton Lenoir. He was a member of St. James Episco pal Church. He was president of Caldwell Motor Co. and a member of the Caldwell Coun ty Civil War Veterans and Widows Pension Commission. He was a descendant of Gen. William Lenoir for whom the town of Lenoir is named. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Virginia Brawley Lenoir, and two sisters, Mrs. James Hogan and Mrs. Eugene Poe of Lenoir. The funeral was held at 10 a m. Thursday at Greer Fu neral Home. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery. Mrs. Mamie Ward Mrs. Mamie Anna Ward, 66, of Sherwood, widow of Wiley B. Ward, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Cannon Memorial Hos pital. She was born in Oklahoma to Roby and Julia Greer Shook, and had lived in Watauga County for 15 years. Surviving are her mother of Sherwood; two sons, Fred Mc Guire of Elk Park and Buster McGuire of Sherwood; a daugh ter, Mrs. Dean Cook of Zion ville; three sisters, Mrs. Doris Shook, Mrs. Clara Stansberry and Mrs. Lois Isaacs of Sher wood; two brothers. Cress Shook of Elk Park and Tom Shook of Johnson City, Tenn. The funeral was held at 2 p. m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Tickets were sold through out the area, and the fun began at 8 p. m. at the Appalachian Elementary School. Pro ceeds are to be used by the Club to equip a pediatrics playroom in the new Watauga County Hospital, and Mrs. Johnny Barnett, president, reports that proceeds, unofficially, are about $200 toward the civic project. (Weston photo) Miss Rhododendron Sees Busy Time In Holidays It has become impossible to accept all the invitations for personal appearances for the North Carolina Rhododendron Queen, Miss Linda Jeanne Blair of Greensboro. "We turn down more than we accept,” her manager said. “Even a beauty queen gets tired, al though she will never show it,” he continued Here is a list of her personal appear ances and parades the next few weeks: It started last week in Tho masville on the 18th-19th at the Piedmont Festival. No vember 22, she will be in Kan napolis. Wednesday the 23rd. she drives to Charlotte for an appearance on Noon Report at 12:00 P M. with Ty Boyd, then rushes back to Salisbury for their parade, then back to the Coliseum in Charlotte for a night appearance. On Thanksgiving Day. Linda will be joined for the first time by members of her court. Debby Shook of Spruce Pine, the Jr. Queen, Miss Elsie Moore of Statesville and Miss Marcia Vickers of Denton, her first and second runners up. They will all ride on the Rho dodendron Float in the Caro linas Carrousel which will be televised. Friday the 25th Queen Linda will be the fea tured attraction in her home town of Greensboro in their morning Christmas parade, then drive to Madison for the Miss Madison Pageant that evening. On her busy schedule are three appearances Saturday the 26th. The Winston-Salem Pa rade at 9:00 A. M., Liberty at 1:00 P. M. and the Miss Den ton Pageant that evening. The 28th and 29th have been set aside for cutting Christmas tapes for our boys and girls in uniform over seas. December 2nd will find Miss Blair and her mother who tra vels with the Queen in the county that gave her the title she now holds, Spruce Pine for their parade, here she will be joined again by Debby Shook the Jr. Queen. Saturday both queens will travel to Burns ville for their parade and fol lowing this, Linda will rush to Boone where she will be a guest of the Jaycees at the Miss Watauga Pageant. December 5th Miss Blair will take part in the Morgan ton Parade, rest on the 6th and then go to Forest City on the 7th and to Statesville the 8th for parades. The 10th ends her tour of local parades in Huntersville. However, she is not through yet. Two weeks were set aside for rest before flying to Pasadena, California for the Tournament of Roses on Dec. 28th, but a request came in for Debby and Linda to appear at The Parson of the Hills Christmas party for needy children on the 17th. and they both accepted. Another request came for the Orthopedic Hospital in Asheville for her to be with the crippled children on the 20th. She accepted. Moscow To New York Officials of the United States and Russia have signed an agreement authorizing direct air service between New York and Moscow. The 5,000-mile trans-Atlantic flights are ex pected to begin next spring. Small Businesses The Defense Department is spreading more of its contracts to small businesses. The per centage of contracts to small businesses has increased three per cent since 1962. The fiscal year which ended June 30, shows 28,000 of these busi nesses shared contracts. On Warren Report President Johnson express ed the opinion recently that he knew of no evidence that would lead “any reasonable person to have a doubt” about the Warren Commission’s re port on the assassination of John F.
