Watauga G.O.P. Leaders Scent Win (Continued from page one) Pennywise At each place setting was a card bearing a Lincoln penny and the Lincoln quote: “Let us in building our new party plant ourselves on the rock of the Declaration of Independ ence, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against us.” Mrs. Lura Greene, who made the cards, announced at the outset of the meeting there were three lucky pen nies in the crowd. Lum Coffey of Blowing Rock and S. C. Eggers of Boone were holders of cards bearing the 1955 and 1949 pennies and received gifts. The County chairman was holder of the 1954 penny and received a beige recliner as a prize. Greene countered the surprise, joking “you never win by sitting down—you got to work.” “We had a slogan in our County,” Mrs. Greene said, “to buy Broyhill furniture, and vote for Bingham." Well ... we bought it.” Mrs. Orville Foster spoke of the Party’s love and apprecia tion for Mrs. Greene’s work and placed on her head a crown of gold foil, naming her “Watauga County Repub lican Queen." Mrs. Greene re ceived a standing ovation. The tables turned. When she removed the crown, she found four $50-bills affixed to it. She publicly renewed her dedication to the Party, pro mising to began organizing next year for the 1968 elec tion. S. C. Orville Foster, re-elected Clerk of Court, said he is “grateful and humble to be the only County man elected, but my joy is not what it might have been if my run ning mates had been elected.” Mrs. Linney Attends IN ATS Conference Mrs. Virginia Wary Linney attended a regional conference of the National Association of Teachers of Singing the past weekend in Winston-Salem.
