The program, with annual improvement as possible, is in the 17th year of presentation and will attract its quarter of a millionth visitor this season. Senior Planetarium Narrator, Norman W. Mattis, who open ed this year’s program, said, “The ‘Star of Bethlehem’ con tinues to be one of the most popular of all the programs we present and remains rela tively unchanged from year to year. I feel that the Christ mas season is not really com plete without reviewing the ideas presented in the pro gram.” Professor Mattis began his narration by presenting the current winter sky to the audience through the use of the giant Zeiss Planetarium projector. Then, using time and space motions of the com plex instrument, he showed his audience what changes would take place in the sky as we travel from Chapel Hill to Bethlehem and go back nearly 2,000 years in time. What the ancients saw in the sky, that might have been the star, was discussed and illus trated. He stated, “Of all the scientific possibilities used to explain the “star”, the idea of coming together of three bright planets, called a con junction, exhibits the best sup porting evidence.” This conjunction was dem onstrated as the audience watched changes take place in the Planetarium’s indoor sky in just the way the Magi might have observed these same motions in nature. “The star” marked the com ing into the world of a “light” so bright that it today still “outshines" that of all the stars combined. Whether “the star” can be explained by science or whether it was a miracle was left to the in dividuals in thi audience to' - decide. Through the use of music, the spoken word. tableaux and colorful special effects, the program then moved to a beautiful but sim ple retelling of the story of the first Christmas. At the conclusion, the sky theatre was transformed into a simulated cathedral complete with gothic arches, stained glass windows and a central rose window high overhead. The audience left in silence as no one seem ed to want to break the thought that had been inspired by the story. “Star of Bethlehem” may be seen at 8:30 p.m. each day; Saturdays at 11 a.m., 1, 3, 4 and 8:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2, 3, 4 and 8:30 pjn. Reservations are not re quired for families and other groups at these hours. How ever, school groups may make reservations to see the pro gram at 11 a.m., 1 and 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Also, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays classes may see “Exploring the Sky”, a pro gram about the constellations. A complete schedule of all programs is available by writ ing to the Planetarium. Please use your Zip Code in all cor respondence. Cattleman Is Named Delegate To Chicago John A.
