Labor Day Travel
Toll Is Over 400
The Labor Day weekend death
toll was lower than expected as
the four-day holiday entered Its
final day Monday. But National
Safety Council officials feared
that homeward-bound traffic on
the final day would cause the
death tabulation to skyrocket.
Some 459 persons were dead
by 1 p. m. today as the result
at auto accidents.
The National Safety Council
had predicted that 560 to 600
persons would die in trafficac

r
cidents over the holiday.
The record (or long holiday
traffic deaths was set last
Fourth of July when 732 persons
died. For comparison, The
Associated Press found that 535
highway death's occurred during
a nonholiday four-day weekend
period from 6 p. m. Friday, Aug.
18, to midnight Monday, Aug.
21.
The safety council advised
motorists Sunday to begin their
homeward journeys early to
prevent the last-minute traffic
jams and rushes that the coun
cil fears would cause the traffic
death toll to rise.
Sunday the death toll jumped
from 327 persons at 6 p. m. to
372 at midnight. But the council
hoped even with this increase
the final figure would still be be
low par for a four-day weekend.
As the weekend went into Its
fourth day, 15 persons were
killed by drowning and 8 per
sons died in boating accidents
since the holiday began.
POSITIVE PURPOSE?—Getting away from the negative aspect
at Boone’s refuse dump, Mayor Clyde Greene Tuesday said
there may be a positive side to the story. He spoke of a plan
used by the City of Hickory in which trash was used as a land
fill on municipal property to be sold. By packing layers of the
trash into hollows and gaps, and covering this with dirt, land
can be made suitable for construction. He said the Board of
Aldermen may consider such a proposal after the water-sewer
construction is finished in the city. (Staff photo)

SOME PEOPLE DON’T BORROW MONEY.
We’re not suggesting that you need a new car. As long as you're
satisfied with the one you have, keep it and enjoy it. But when
it’s time to look for something else and money help is needed,
remember that The Northwestern Bank offers the most reasonable
new car loan in town.
Northwestern’s rock bottom interest rate and the easy
payment plans are so popular that even old time non-borrowers
are slowing down when they drive by.
