Pigeon Roost News Oldest Report Card In Region Harrison McCoury reported to the writer that he probably has the oldest school grade card of anybody in this lower end of Mitchell County. The grade card was wrote out on tablet paper by teacher Maloye Griffith and got a 97% average when he was promoted from the 7th grade. McCoury said this was school term of 1919 and Griffith as sistant teacher was Miss Myra Webb now Mrs. Javine Hughes and the school building stood about where Charlie Whitson barn is at on Raccoon Branch at Tipton Hill. McCoury said the first dollar that he ever earned was build ing fires at this same school house when he was about 10 years old and Garfa Griffith was his teacher. He said that him and Frank .Tones who is now Mitchell County-County Accountant was accounted among the best spellers in school and they had to split between them one dollar in prize money when they tied in a spelling match. He said the boys sawed wood with a cross cut saw and split it with an axe and done this work free after someone haul ed the wood to the school house and the wood was burned in an Ironside stove and the chil dren would all set around the stove during the cold weather time. He said there was about 45 or 50 children who attend ed the one room school build ing during the years of 1918 and 1919. It is reported that the el ectric lights was extended last Friday to the home of Wil liam Honeycutt of Mitchell County who lives on the banks of Toe River near the village of Relief. Mr. and Mrs. Hon eycutt has been married about 30 years but this is the first time that they have had el ectric lights in any of the ectric lights in any of the homes that they ever have lived in. Mr. and Mrs. Honeycutt are former residents of Pig eon Roost area. Garther Barnett a retired merchant of Pigeon Roost area reported that he has shot and Killed only 15 snakes this sum mer in Pigeon Roose area. He usually kills over 100 each summer. But he said by killir« so many he has the snakes thinned down considerably. He hunts for the snakes along the Pigeon Roost Creek and never travels over a mile away from home up or down the creek bank looking for the snakes to shoot. If Barnett has only killed 15 snakes so far this summer he probably holds the title as champion snake killer which he has been for sev eral years. It is reported that Ephlee Peterson has sold his farm on Pigeon Roose to a business man in Johnson City who he and his family plan to spent weekends at his farm. The new owner has put several head of cattle in his pasture. Dewey Hughes has recently had some repair work done to his dwelling house which is lo cated at Jake Hollow on Pig eon Roost. Several men who live in this lower end of Mitchell County section and who have been work ing in Johnson City for several years has recently changed jobs and are now employed at the new furniture plant in Spruce Pine. Mr. and Mrs. Lealon Lewis of Greenville, Tenn., attended the memorial and decoration service held last Sunday morn ing at the Barnett Cemetery on Rich Mountain which is on the waters of Pigeon Roost Creek which ended the deco ration services for this year in this area. There was ap proximately eight decoration services held in this area this summer. Ralph Hughes of Hanover, Pa„, spent the weekend on Pigeon Roost visiting his parents Mrc and Mrs. Will Hughes. Mrc Hughes attended the preaching service Saturday night at the Pigeon Roose Freewill Baptist Church held by the pastor Rev. Holt Harrell of Burbank near Hampton, Tenn.
