LINES AND MORE LINES—Forty-six hundred resident students flooded the Appalachian State University last weekend as they readied themselves for classes which began Monday morning. There was the expected confusion and delay as traffic snarled around dormitories and as endless registration lines grew longer. But 4600 students and almost as many administrators agreed that without planning, the situation could have been a lot worse. As students headed into their first week at classes, problems resolved themselves and students and faculty show signs of settling down to schedule. Above, students slowly file through the cafeteria lour^e to pay their quarterly fees. PIGEON ROOST NEWS Says Tobacco Blooms Are Source Of Honey For Bees BY J. MILLER, RELIEF, N. C. 28769 The writer and family accom panied by our good friends Mr. and Mrs. Sam Owensby of Mi ami, Fla., who are spending a 30 day vacation stay in the Mitchell County area spent last Friday and Saturday in Mitchell, Avery, Burke and Yancey County visit ing several new places sight seeing. First Friday night we spent several hours at Wisemans View and had picnic supper and watch ing for Brown Mountain Lights. There was too much haze on the Jonas Ridge Mountain to be a good night to see the phenomenon lights. My cousin Carmon Miller and family joined our party at Wise mans View to watch for Brown Mountain lights. It was the Mil ler family fourth time to watch for the lights and Mr. and Mrs. Owensby had also seen the lights before. But it was the first time that anyone in our family had ever visited Wisemans View. On our way up to Wisemans View we looked down on Linville River gorge and Linville Falls at several points of interest. It was really a great sight to see all the wonderful views es pecially the formation of the rocks on the mountainsides. After visiting Wisemans View we returned back to the summer home of our friends Mr. and Mrs. Owensby and spent the night which is located near Little Switzerland. They call their place Dogwood Cove”. It certainly is a beautiful place. On Saturday we traveled many mile* of the Parkway and visited Crabtree Meadows and had pic nic dinner on Mt. Mitchell. We came back by Busic on South Toe River and visited Carolina Hemlock Camp Grounds. We certainly had a most interest ing and enjoyable trip. On the same trip Mr. and Mrs. Owensby visited the Hughes farm at Byrd Creek on Pigeon Roost and had the Miller Park Hughes ground them a “turn” of corn on his grist mill which they will take It back to their home in Florida. Mr. Owensby is a native of Crossville, Term., a mountain section near Knoxville and Mrs. Owensby is a native of Georgia. They both love the mountains of North Carolina. There was singing and preaching service held Sunday at the Pigeon Roost FreewUl Bap tist Church. The pastor Holt Harrell done the preaching and singing was done by the Miller choir and Wllburt Barnett and Eddie Lewis picked the gui tar for him. Dinner was served on tables on the church lawn and a very large crowd was In at tendance. We learned something this summer season that we never knew before that honey bees was great number in tobacco fields when the tobacco was in full bloom and Just before it was ready to be topped. From all indications the bees was gather ing sweet honey from tne tobacco blootn. The farmers lets their tobacco bloom out good now before they ever top it and prob ably the bees can soon gather a lot of honey from a half acre crop of tobacco. Many of the farmers here now spray their tobacco with some kind of sucker control after they top it and the farmers report that they don't have a sucker to pull off. Harvesting of tobacco in this lower end of Mitchell County t *-1 ■» « ’a » V »• -s h section is stil going on in full swing. Much tobacco was set out late and the completing of the harvesting of tobacco this seas on will probably be a little late than usual. One farmer said that with the cool nights and warm days the crops will ripening awful fast. Some farmers here have already dug their potato crop and report that their crop made a good yield.
