Letters To The Editor Dear Sir: When is the Congress going to do something more than pass the so-called “Gun Control'* bill included in recent4'Crime Control" legislation! How many more of our great leaders, and thousands of lesser persons must be murdered before adequate national legis lation is enacted? 5,600 American citizens, in cluding 155 police officers, were killed in this country last year. Only 20 were killed in Great Britain where even policemen are not armed; 30 in France; and 37 in Japan, in all of which ‘‘re are very stringent gun co>. 1 laws. Every Western country has more adequate gun control legislation than the pro posed U. S. law! Few states have adequate con trol. In those that do, people simply go into an adjoining state and buy. Police records of gun confiscation during the 1967 Detroit and Newark riots, showed that most guns were purchased in nearby Ohio and Pennsylvania which have much less stringent legislation than Michigan and New Jersey. It took years for the Congress to “defy", even in such a mild manner, the highly “unofficial ly" organized lobby and the national letter writing cam paigns erf the National Rifle Association, and yet this pow erful organization represent less than one half of one per cent of die American people in its claimed membership! The emphasis which the NRA makes on the Second Amend ment to the U. S. Constitution, taken out erf context, with ref erence to the “security of a well organized militia" is mis leading. Congress could and should provide that all citizens entitled to buy and own guns be allowed to do so. Another “argument" is “in fringement of personal liberty” in requiring a permit to buy or own a gun! Yet few persons question the right of local, state, and Federal governments to require permits to drive a car, catch fish, hunt, own a dog, nm a motor boat, and cm and 9°’ - Why should any law abiding -citizen object to a permit with similar personal identification to buy any kind of gun anywhere? Or to bring in for registration one of the some 50 to 100 million guns now in the hands of private citizens? On June 9, interviewed on the NBC “Face the Nation" program on TV, Senator Joseph Tidings, probably the best in formed man in the Congress on the need for gun control laws, called the present bill “wholly inadequate" and only a weak “first step"—“only better than nothing", and demanded that the Congress “face up to the true dimensions of the gun problem in this country" and said “It is clearly time for legislation that does." Yet 53 Senators voted against even in cluding rifles and shotguns in the mail order restrictions. And it was a mail order rifle, without required identification, that killed President Kennedy! Thank you for carefully read ing this appeal. And please think about it! Sincerely yours, Paul N. Campbell Rogers Drive Boone, N. C.
