MBS YOUNG MBS MORETZ Five Are Given Scholarships At Appalachian Five high school seniors from western North Carolina have been selected to receive $500 James G. K. McClure Fund scholarships for study during the next academic year at Ap palachian State University. The Scholarship Committee of the McClure Educational and Development Fund announced this week that the awards will go to Claude L. Hughes III of Newland; Judith Lorraine Miller of Laurel Springs; VickieCaren Phillips of Spruce Pine; and Martha Kay Moretz and Martha Mays Young, both of Boone. The objective of the scholar ship program of the McClure Fund is to aid financially de serving and academically prom ising residents of the 22-county area of western North Carolina to pursue their formal educa tions beyond high school. Can didates were recommended by the university. In the choice of scholarship recipients, the following factors were considered: high school record for both scholarship and leadership, evidence of Christ ian character, financial need, intellectual promise and de monstrated ambition. The scholarship awards are conditioned upon the holder's doing academic work acceptable to Appalachian State University and to the McClure Fund. Summer Drama Group To Play At Appalachian The summer drama group, the Appoliday Players, will open their season Monday, June 24, with their presentation of Penny Wise. Curtain time is 8 p. m. in Chapell Wilson Hall and ad mission is $1.50 for adults. Holders of ASU identification cards will be admitted for $1. The second opening will be Wednesday, June 26, with Bare foot in the Park. The third opening is set for July 3, when the Appoliday Play ers will take a deep breath and put on: Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamin's Hung You inthe Closet And I’m Feeling So Sad. July 10 will be the beginning of the one-act play, Marriage Proposal, as a curtain raiser to “Oh Dad”. Scheduled season is June 24 to Aug. 24 for cast members Miss Jean Baker, Miss Josie i Reed, Miss Cberie £31 edge, Daylon Thompson, Gil Ott,Greg Sides and Jim Thorp.
