Disastrous Fires Spark
Movement For Fire Dent
A business fire doing an es
timated $60,000 to $70,000 dam
age, three house fires and sev
eral brush fires in the Cove
Creek area have prompted resi
dents of this westside com
munity to provide better fire
protection for themselves.
Actually there has been talk
of a fire department for the
rural area for two or three
years, according to Jerry
Adams, local insurance agent
and resident of the Cove Creek
Surname Boone Found
In England Way Back
The Richmond Times-Dis

in its July 21st issue titled
“What's in Your Name?” which
was sent in by Mrs. Eula H.
Boatright of Richmond, Va.
4 ‘The surname Boone is found
in England from the time of the
conquest and it is most likely
that the name is of Norman
origin.

City Workers Are
Treated To Dinner
Three members of the Horn
in the west staff treated four
city workers and their wives
to a steak dinner Monday, Aug.
19, in appreciation for work
the men did in putting in a
water line to the rehearsal
hall.
Hosts were Jack Gallion,
theater manager; Bill Ross,
principal player in the drama;
and Hagan King of the techni
cal staff. Their wives also at
tended.
Roby Greene, Bennie Greene,
David Austin and Robert Town
send used their spare time to
complete the new water line to
the rehearsal hall at the Daniel
Boone Amplitheater.
The rehearsal hall was built
this summer for drama and
technical classes. It also was the
site of the Powder Horn Theater
productions presented by Horn
in the West cast members.
About Your
! Home
A home workshop that the
whole family can use and enjoy
is a must not a luxury. It will
save the homeowner many dol
lars in repair bills each year.
It keeps your tools and sup
plies right where you need
them—making it possible to do
a more accurate job. It will
stimulate interest in the home
; and its up-keep.
» You don’t need a large am
* ount of space to have a well
equipped workshop. In the first
place there is no must location
for a workshop. It can be in the
attic, basement or garage. One
end of the utility room may be
closed off with folding doors
and converted into a fine work
shop.
If you choose the attic, it
would be wise to soundproof
the floor, install good lighting
and air-conditioning.
There is a tuckaway type
workshop that will fit into a
closet. Equip the closet with

In 1086 in the Domesday Book
this variant of the name is re
corded when a Bohun received
the manor erf Talsford.
“In 1275 the name ‘Bown’ is
found in the Hundred Rolls, a
listing of property and owners
taken at the direction of Ed
ward I in order to locate new
sources of revenue. The same
records show a ‘Boon’ *n Cam
bridgeshire in 1279.
“In some cases the name may
have also been derived from
the Anglo-French adjective ‘e
bon’ meaning the good person,
good companion (boon compan
ion) or one who was handsome.
“Americans immediately call
to mind the famed American
pioneer, Daniel Boone, founder
of Boones boro, Ky.
“A man called Solomon Boone
sailed from Brandnik in Devon,
England, and arrived in Bristol,
Pa., in 1690.
“William Jones Boone, an
American biship, was conse
crated missionary bishop of
Shanghai in 1844. He translated
the prayerbook into Chinese and

area. He has been one of the
leaders in the establishment
of the fire department.
Adams said that even though
the Bcone Fire Department had
responded well to alarms in
the Cove Creek area, the time
element involved in getting
equipment to a fire made it
impossible for a fire to be
adequately contained.
He said that Boone fire
fighting equipment had been used
to protect other property sur
rounding a blaze.
One of the biggest problems
encountered so far, said Adams,
is location of property on which
to erect a fire house. No de
cision had yet been reached
on financing the project and
he said that the cost of estab
lishing the department could not
be estimated at this point.
He commented that there is
some interest in establishing
a fire district to cover a four
mile radius from die fire house.
The fire district area under
consideration would provide
protection for some 500 homes
and 18business establishments.
Adams said, “We’re looking
into different things,” concern
ing equipment and he said that
a retired fireman from Wash
ington, D. C„ who is part of the
organizing group, would be in
the Capitol City on a vacation
trip and while there, check on
equipment.
After the department is ap
proved by the State Fire Com
mission, Cove Creek residents
may receive as much as a five
per-cent reduction in fire in
surance rates.
Adams reports “good repre
sentation” from residents at
planning meetings and said the
next meeting will be Monday,
Sejrt. 16. At that time, a fire
chief and other department of
ficers are to be selected.
