Wells have returned from Gloucester County, Virginia, where they were the guests of R. W. P. Muse and Miss Margaret Muse at “Dunlop-on- York.” Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Sawyer and children, and Miss Alma Howell of Hertford left Monday night on a motor trip to Hagerstown, Md., and Philadelphia. They are expecting to return to Edenton on Sunday. R. H. Bachman and Rev. Toppin returned Wednesday night from Rocky Mount, where they attended a meeting of the Presbyterian church, in session in that city Tuesday and Wednesday. Mrs. E. T. White and Miss Bea trice White returned Sunday to their home at Morgart’3 Beach, after spending the past two weeks as the guests of friends and relatives in and near Edenton. Marvin Skiles and sisters, Misses Elizabeth and Evelyn Skiles, and Miss Dorothy Butler spent Sunday at Hodges Ferry, Va., with Mr. and Mrs. Willie Culpepper. Mr. and Mrs. Willie White and little son have returned to their home on Oakum street, after an ex tended visit with relatives in Vir ginia. Miss Clara Forbes, who has been the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Morgan on West Church street for the past week, returned Sundfey to her home at Jarvisburg. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Waff and daughter, Carolyn, of Portsmouth, Va., spent the week-end at the home of Mr. Waff’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Waff, Sr., at “The Emperor.” Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Leary and son of Norfolk spent the past week end in Edenton as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Leary on East Queen street. Mrs. Rupert Goodwin spent Friday at Jarvisburg. She was accom panied by her mother, Mrs. Oscar Symons, who had been her guest for several days. Mrs. Maxwell R. Warden and son of Richmond have been spending sev eral days as guests of Mrs. Warden’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Good win, near Edenton. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ferguson of Washington, D. C„ are guests of Mrs. Ferguson’s mother, Mrs. E. R. Marriner and Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Coffield for several days. Mr. and Mrs. John F. White, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Goodwin and Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Goodwin attended the Hagenback-Wallace circus in Green ville on Thursday night. Roy Symons of Jarvisburg has re turned to his home, after being the guest of his sister, Mrs. Rupert Goodwin, on East King street, over the past week-end. Mrs. Ethel Krause and Mr. and Mrs. Hogart of Elizabeth City spent Sunday in Edenton as guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. W. Bunch, on West Eden street. Mrs. Annie Jordan has returned to her home at Yeopim, after spending several days as the guest of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Yates Jordan, on Blount street. Earl Goodwin, Caleb Goodwin, Charlie Conger, Richard Elliott and Wade Olive spent the past week-end at Nags Head fishing. Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank White, Sr., and children, Miss Lena Mason and Leon Leary attended the circus in Washington, N, C., on Friday. Miss Elizabeth Jacobs of South Mills is the house guest of Mayor and Mrs. E. W. Spires on East Queen street. Mrs. C. L. Russ of Greenville and Mrs. John Howell of Norfolk spent last Friday in Edenton, visiting friends. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Sexton spent! Sunday afternoon in Elizabeth City, [ where they attended the football I game. Clinton Bunch, an employee of Quinn Furniture Company, spent the week-end at his home in Elizabeth City. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hollowed and Miss Marion Fiske spent Saturday in Norfolk, where they attended the showing of “The Green Pastures.” Mrs. R. H. Sexton and two sons of Norfolk visited Mrs. Sexton’s sister, Mrs. W. A. Sexton, on North Broad street, on Sunday. Mrs. W. 0. Speight has been con fined to her home near Edenton for several days with an attack of ma -1 .iaria. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Speight and children were the week-end guests of Mrs. Speight’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Taylor, at South Mills. Edward Asbell and Josiah Elliott have returned from Asheville, where they have been in the C. C. camps for the past several months. Campen spent Sunday in Elizabeth City as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Skinner Jordan. Mrs. C. A. Boyce was the guest of friends in Greenville over the past week-end. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. HASTE Mr. and Mrs. Erie Haste announce the birth of a son on Sunday night, September 30, at their home near Edenton. AND ANOTHER BOY Mr. and Mrs. John Burton Harri son announce the birth of an eight pound son John Burton, Jr., on Sun day night, September 30, at their home in the Rea apartments. STORK AT BROOKLYN Mr. and Mrs. Don Francis, former ly of Edenton but now living in Brooklyn, N. Y., announce the birth of a daughter, Ann Gertrude, on September 29th. Both baby and mother are reported to be getting along fine. Taylor Theatre Wants Children To See Show On Friday Shirley Teemple makes her debut on the screen of the Taylor Theatre, while today’s offering is an hilarious musical comedy attraction. On today’s program is Ruth Etting also. On October 11 and 12 the local theatre is the first in this territory to bring Gene Stratton Porter’s im mortal “Girl of the Limberlost” to the screen. Every school girl and boy should 3ee this picture. The management will be glad to effect tie-ups with schools of the town and county if the teachers will bring enough of the pupils in to warrant a reduction in prices. Muth returned Tuesday to his home on West Eden street from Norfolk, where he has been a patient at St. Vincent’s Hospital since Fri day of last week. Mr. Muth under went a minor operation at the Nor folk hospital, from which he is re covering rapidly. Mr. Muth’s many friends in Eden ton will be delighted to learn of his satisfactory condition. ? C. f V X r RAILROAD RUMBLES v__ . / W. T. Marsh of Suffolk, conductor on a Norfolk Southern yard engine, reported back to work Monday after a trip to Chicago to attend the World’s Fair. While in Edenton Mr. Marsh makes his home with Mr. and Mr 3. H. B. Jones. Captain C. T. Doughtie has return ed to his duties as flagman on the Edenton-Suffolk switcher after being off duty since July. Work of repairing the damaged passenger station of the Norfolk Southern Railroad has now been com pleted. The depot was damaged some time ago by backing a freight car onto the platform, tearing down the shelter and part of the roof. The damage is estimated at approximately SIOO, not counting the shelter over the platform, which will not be re placed. Legionnaires Invited To Elizabeth City The Seth Perry Post of the Ameri can Legion of Elizabeth City will in stall officers for the coming year on Monday night, October 8, at 7:30 o’clock. The ceremonies will be held in the Junior Order hall at the cor ner of Martin street and Colonial avenue. A supper will be served in connection with the installation. The principal speaker for the occa sion will be Henry Stevens, of War saw, N. C., former national com mander of the American Legion. The Elizabeth City Boy Scout drum and bugle corps will furnish music and other entertainment has been provided for. Invitations have been sent to posts in this section and the Ed Bond post of Edenton has been asked especially to send a large delegation to the affair. Commissioners Hold Monthly Meeting The Chowan County Commissioners met in monthly session on Monday with a full board present, as follows: Julien Wood, chairman*. W. H. Win borne, A. D. Ward, J. A. Webb and A. C. Boyce. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved, the board also passing on standing orders for help in support and ordered all bills paid. It was ordered that $2,631.56 be paid for coupons and exchanges due October 1, 1934. The county treasurer was also au thorized to transfer sufficient funds from the general fund to cover the deficit, if any, as may appear in the general county fund as of October 31, 1934. EDENTON PEOPLE ATTEND CIRCUS IN WASHINGTON Quite a number of Edenton people attended the Hagenback - Wallace circus in Washington, N. C., on Fri day of last week. Those attending included: Misses Edna Goodwin, Billie Goodwin, Ruth Davenport, Sarah Lee Hobbs and Helen Goodwin, Mrs. Arthur Chap pell and children, Mr. and Mrs. George Dail, Mr. and Mrs. James Speight, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Mansfield, Abram Jenkins, Jimmy Partin, Gus Hughes, James Mitch ener, George Hoskins and Pete Smith. HARRY SMITH IMPROVING FROM MAJOR OPERATION Harry Smith who recently under went a major operation at Duke Hospital, Durham, is reported to be convalescing satisfactorily. Mr. Smith’s many friends in Edenton will be glad to learn of his improved con dition. BANK DIRECTORS MEET The board of directors of the Bank of Edenton held its monthly meet ing Tuesday afternoon.
