Washington, D. C. —Combining ef
forts to educate the general public
in the advantages offered to home
owners by the National Housing
Act with a general support to the
fire prevention program, the nation
wide organization of the Federal
Housing Administration is engaged
in helping to organize celebrations
of National Fire Prevention Week, to
be held October 6-12.
A report from Associate Director
Muller of Maryland is typical of ac
tivity being generated in every state
in the Union. Mr- Muller has ob
tained the full cooperation of the
Baltimore Fire Department, and the
chief of the fire department there
has agreed to make radio talks dur
ing Fire Prevention Week on the
elimination of fire hazards. Fire
men in Baltimore will also assist in
the distribution of literature per
taining to fire hazard reduction.
Field representatives throughout the
whole state of Maryland have been
instructed to obtain similar coopera
tion wherever possible.
From Kansas City, Mo., comes the
report that literature explaining the
t relation of the* Federal Housing Ad
ministration’s program to fire hazard
Jduction will be distributed in pub
lic schools, so that pupils may carry
the message into their homes.
Cooperation has been given the
Housing Administration by many
industrial agencies, radio stations,
chambers of commerce and fire pre
vention organizations.
The National Fire Waste Council,
the National Fire Protection Asso
ciation, the International Association
of Electrical Inspectors, the National
Association of Commercial Organiza
tion Secretaries, the Anthracite In
stitute, the National Committee on
Boys’ and Girls’ Club Work, and

the Housing Administration com
mending its activity in the cause of
fire hazard reduction,

International Meeting
I. Lee Parker, district manager of
the North Carolina Employment Ser
vice, with headquarters in Edenton,
left Thursday for Raleigh prepara
tory to attending the International
Association of Public Employment
Service of the United States and
Canada, to be held in Asheville. He
was accompanied by Mrs. Parker and
will remain away from the local of
fice about a week.
Officials of the Employment Ser
vices of the United States and Cana
da will gather in Asheville to discuss
the problems of unemployment, other
related problems and unemployment
compensation as they affect the Em
ployment Services. Over two hundred
and fifty Employment Service offi
cials from Washington, each of the
forty-eight States and Canada, will
register at the convention headquar
ters Thursday and Friday. This con
vention will be followed by the Na
tional Conference of Directors of
State Employment Services on Octo
ber through the 9th.
The combination of these two
meetings is the first complete assem
bly of the Employment Services of
the United States and Canada that
has been held.
The first two days will be devoted
to discussions covering Social Secur
ity and the Wagner Social Security
Act. On the following two days,
discussions will center around the
progress and plans of the Employ
ment Service as a permanent insti
tution in an industrial society. The
remaining discussions will be con
cerned with the Employment Service
as the placement agency in the new
Works Program.
During Mr. Parlcer’s absence the
local office will be in charge of F. I.
White. Mrs. H. C. Wozelka will also
be on her vacation during the week,
and Mrs. Randolph Holloman of the
Murfreesboro office will take over
Mrs. Wozelka’s duties.
