The Ipdge has had a very success ful year, having an increase in mem bership, and among other things boasts one of the most unique meet ing places in the State since the room has been decorated by Paul Olsson. String Music Jan. 10 At Beech Fork School The “Chowan Coon Hunters” will put on a show of string music and black face comedy at Beech Fork school Friday night, January 10th, at 7:30 o’clock. The show will be divid i ed into three parts: first, old-time tunes with Sidney Ward, violin; Roy Evans, banjo; Perlie and Emmett ' Ashley, guitars; second part, a snap py blackface comedy act, “Ham and Eggs,” presented by Perlie and Em mett Ashley, with an assortment oi jokes, songs and peppy music. The last part will be an all request pro gram. These musicians are well-known throughout the Albemarle, having won first prize in several fiddlers conventions. The public is cordially invited to come and enjoy an evening of splen did entertainment. There will be r small admission charge. FIVE MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED OVER WEEK-END Five marriage licenses were issued by Mrs. Maurice L. Bunch since De cember 24, all of these couples being white. Watermelon Time For W. T. Perry W. T. Perry, of Rocky Hock, this week laid further claim to his title of watermelon king of Chowan Coun ty. Besides raising the largest crop of the largest melons, Mr. Perry now claims the distinction of being the last person to sell a melon of the 1935 cisp. Mr. Perry had two watermelons in his store in Rocky Hock and on Mon- ( day sole] one of them to George Goodwin for 25 cents, the other melon still being in the store. The melon appeared to be solid and was in good shape, but Mr. Goodwin carried i’ away before applying a knife. S. A. White Dijs After Long Illness Samuel Arthur White, age 60, died at his home on West Eden Street Thursday morning, December 26, fol lowing an illness of about 18 years the last three of which he has bee: an invalid. He had been a resident of Chowan County for 40 years, com ing here from Perquimans County The deceased is survived by his wife. Mrs. .Sarah Margaret White; one daughter, Mrs. H. C- Goodwin, -Jr., of Asheville;, two. sons, Skinner and John Richard White; a granddaugh ter; Sarah Ellen Goodwin, of Ashe ville; his step-mother. Mrs. J. O White, Sr., and five brothers, Joshua Joseph, John 0., Jr., Jacob and Julian White, all of Perquimans County. Five sisters also survive as follows: Mrs. L. R- Chappell, of Elizabeth City; Mrs. John H. Harrell and Mrs. H. D. Elliott, of Edenton; Mrs. A. G Griffin, of Suffolk, Va., and Mrs. A. Keen, of Petersburg, Va. Funeral services were held in thr Edenton Baptist Church on Friday afternoon with Rev. E. L. Wells, the pastor, officiating. Interment took place in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: T. C. By rum, Frank Muth, R. E. Leary, D. M. Reeves, J. A. Curran and C. E. By rum. Thosp attending the funeral from out-of-town were Mrs. Josephine Skinner, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. T. Skin ner, Linwood Skinner, Mrs. Annie Chalk, Fred Chalk, Miss Louise Chalk, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Hefren, and Miss Marjorie Hefren, all from Hertford; Mrs. Frank Banks, Nor folk, Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Owen Morgan, Raleigh; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Chalk. Statesville; L. R. Chappell and Miss Elizabeth Chappell, Elizabeteh City. SPLIT IN DEBATE The debating teams of Colerain and Windsor High Schools split in the debate held last week when the Wind sor negative, debaters won over the Colerain* affirmatives in Colerain.
