PASTOR BRIGGS
AGAIN TALKING
THROUGH HIS HAT
jSays Herald Editor Or
ders Him Out of Cho
wan County For Be
ing a Republican
For the Editor of The Chowan
Herald to undertake to order me out
of Chowan County because I am
affiliated with the Republican party
is enough to stir one's blood to the
boiling point. Has he forgotten that
Chowan County is still a part of the
United States, which guarantees un
to me the same rights to live in
Chowan that is guaranteed unto the
man claiming to be a Democrat?
Has he forgotten that the American
Constitution provides that a Republi
can shall also have the same protec
tion by the law in this or any other
county of the nation that one calling
himself a Democrat shall have ?
Who is Bufflap to order me out of
Chowan County because I’m affiliated
with the Republican party? I was
bom and reared in North Carolina,
and in this State my political views
took their defiinite shape. But my
political views are a matter of deep
conviction and not a matter of mere
convenience, as seems to have been
the case with Mr. Bufflap’s many re
ligious affiliations, and which might
he the case with his political affilia
tion if he should be located in some
parts of Pennsylvania, or in New
York or Massachusetts. Wherever I
go my convictions both religiously
and politically remain the same. My
party might change its platform so
that I would have to part company
with it in part or in whole, but it
could not change my convictions. I
happen to be a Republican thus far
because it happens to be the party
which more nearly than any other
tallies with my convictions of what
a party ought to be and stand for.
It is no doubt true that both major
parties have much corruption within;
but even then I cling to the Republi
can party as the lesser of two inevit
able evils, with by far more to com
mend itself to a people seeking a
►> righteous government than has the
so-called Democratic party. And
wh£t is more, I find that the masses
ol Southern people seem to be turn
ing more- and more toward those
great principles for which the Re
-1 publican party has so long contend
ed. It is this “Southern Democracy”
falsely so-called of which I am sick
and tired.
If those poor people jerked up be
cause they had not had their dogs
inoculated were not slammed in
jail, then why did The Chowan Her
ald represent it that some of them
were? In this paper of July 23rd, I
read in the last column of the first
page that, “A number of the de
fendants arranged to raise the mon
ey, but the majority claimed that
they had no money and had no way
of getting it.” Now, if that doesn’t
leave the impression that -there was
a majority of those brought before
the Justice who were thrown in jail
because they could not raise the
money to keep out of jail, then
there is no way to interpret plain
> English. Let the Editor give us the
truth about the news before he
jumps on us for writing something
upon the strength of information as
he has handed it out through his
paper. *Has it come to the place
where we, cannot depend upon The
Herald for the truth about the news ?
There is such a thing as being able
to raise money to keep out of jail for
stealing a twelve-pound bag of flour
when the defendant could not have
raised the money to have bought the
flour itself; and I expect this was
much the way possibly with some of
the defendants under consideration;
and that had it not been for sympa
thy aroused and indignation stirred
these poor victims would have had
to go to jail, nevertheless. So the
f principle of injustice remains the
same. And, yes, there are still mil
lions too poor to have a dog inocu
lated.
When I wrote the last sentence of
*my last story to The Herald I had in
mind the question of the justice in
volved. What I had to say was juat
like a real preacher of the gospel who
resents the injustice that has been
poured out upon the people by a
political ring that usurps authority
ogmtthe people, crushing the poor
ancHa.e needy just to enrich them
(selves. In the 27th chapter of Deu
teronomy I read eleven times that,
«<* * * all the people say, Amen,” to
the curses df God to be poured out
upon those who oppress the poor,
crush the needy, and who refuse to
heed the voice of the Lord. That
word “Amen” is spelled almost ex
actly alike in Hebrew, Greek and
English. It is an expression of
heartfelt approval and indorsement,
as well as of thanks, for what has
been, or is yet to be said or done;
and when I say that I thank God
that there is an eternal Hell for
{hose who go unchecked as they con
tinue to pour out injustice upon the
poor and the helpless, I am just
simply living up to that which I find
given at least eleven times in one
in time, and political rings may
shield them from the penalty of
man-made laws, but I thank God for
the Throne of Justice which they
cannot escape, and for the hell of
eternal fire that even now is wait
ing to embrace them. I thank God
that His throne of grace is also a
throne of justice.

Farewell Party Held
For Mrs. T.C. White
Last Tuesday afternoon at four
o’clock, members of the Byrd Home
Demonstration Club, went to the
home of Mrs. T. C. White to say
goodbye. As each lady came in she
left a package on the table in the
hall. When Mrs. White' came in
they were all seated, and at once
found a chair for her, after which
the President of the Club went out
in the hall and brought in the
packages, which were given to Mrs.
White. She opened them, reading
the cards, and expressing her appre
ciation for the remembrances. Just
after this some of the members had
arranged for ice cream to be sent in,
which was very much enjoyed by all.
Mrs. White has been an active
member of the Club for some time,
and the members all regret to have
her leave, but realize what our com
munity looses, another community
gains.
Mr. and Mrs. White moved to Man
teo Wednesday to make their future
home.
