This was good news, enough good news to .make the husbandmen follow his advise carefully about worm eiimtim*- tioa. vaccination, dry acreage in which to pasture, and such like. Last year it wasn’t so good, this talked of price. To keep it up. and mot so high at that, pigs were killed by the million to hold down toe sup ply. This year, the specialist said the supply would not equal toe de mand at the stoek yards, so natural ly a better price can be expected. County igemt X. K. Rowell said Chowan farmers raised $100.(900 worth of hogs annually, and this will mean nearly half as much more with toe increased price. There is money in hogs, apparent ly, and judging from questions ask ed at Tuesday's meeting. Chowan farmers are vitally interested n getting toeir share. W. Taylor, extension specialist from Raleigh. The address was enlivened by moving pictures on the control of hog diseases and para sites. In introducing Mr. Taylor, County Farm Agent N. K. Rowell said that Chowan, farmers would raise more Shan SIOOJIOO worth of hogs toft year, and this value was enhanced fey the cheering comment by Mt. Taylor that present day indications were that (toe price of hogs on toe Chicago market would be IS cents within a short while and that this was occa sioned by toe demand far exceeding toe 1936 supply. Mr. Taylor dwelt particularly on toe care that should fee shown te feeding swine, mentioning soy bean oil meal, adding that the porcines should fee turned at large, as ter as possible, te green pastures, avoid ance being shown to woodlands and damp places where parasites breed so prolifically. He also emphasised the importance of self-feeders as well as an adequate supply of water. Mr. Rowell also took advantage of the gathering to inform those presen; that a considerable sum of money has been lost by Chowan termers by not fully cooperating te the government's soil-building practices. He pointed out that the average base for toe county for all crops was 34,475 acres which if termers would have reduced according to government plan would have permitted the planting of 27,227. By reducing ’J3B acres and planting them in soil conserving crops tenners would have received plus ST,46TJSS for soil building practices, bringing the total to $96,3113.43. About 60 per cent of this amount has . been qualified for, but due to mis understanding or downright refusal to cooperate toe remaining 40 percent has been lost.
