PAGE TWO White Man Exonerated In Automobile Fatality Another motor smash fatality oc curred in the county last Thursday night when Bill Coffleld, Negro, was the victim of a three car smash on the Virginia Highway just south of j Evans Church. Coffleld died three | hours after the accident in the Albe marle hospital, Elizabeth City. His head had been crushed in and he ad ditionally suffered a broken leg and arm. On Friday morning with a contin uation into the next day Coroner M. P. Whichard conducted an inquest into the cause of the catastrophe. Judson B. Schleifer, of Miami, Fla., driver of an advertising circus truck j which was one of the vehicles figur ing in the road mishap, and who was hurt about the forehead and hand, had been held by the authorities. The inquest exhonerated him of all blame, however. According to Corporal George Dail, home from the Fort Raleigh celebration for a few hours Thurs day night, Schleifer and Coffleld were coming south on the highway. One vehicle tried to pass the other, and both turned over, the Coffleld car being completely torn asunder and wrecked. In the meantime Ar thur G. Byrum, of the Ryland sec tion, came from the direction of his home and in the rain and darkness crashed into the two overturned cars. Fortunately he was unhurt but his car was badly damaged. A large crowd of Edentonians were attracted to the scene out of curios ity and saw Coffleld sent on hurriedly to Dr. J. A. Powell’s office, where it was found nothing could be done for the injured man, and he was sent to . Elizabeth City where he soon died. | MACEDONIA 1 V J Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Bass and son were supper guests Saturday evening of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Emminizer, in Edenton. IT’S POSSIBLE TO “FARM THE LAND AND KEEP IT TOO” In contradiction to an old saying— ‘•you can’t have your cake and eat it too”—the Soil Conservation Service points to thousands of good farmers who “farm their land and keep ! t too.” Along with other units of the Unit ed States Department of Agriculture the Soil Conservation Service finds increasing evidence that properly farmed—there is plenty of land to grow even more than the Nation needs, and yet maintain fertility, control erosion, and maintain game birds and other wildlife disappearing from farm lands. There are increasing reports to the Department that complete subju gation of the land is not necessari ly good farming and that “clean” farming on sloping lands with rec tangular fields, straight rows, no strip cropping, fences parallel to section lines and no shrubs, trees, or permanent pasture, is a sure way to “farm your land and lose it too.” Ik j| j| iB vpMKIIVnHfIjKjpH r Automatic Tuning PHILCO Built for your convenience!
