BIG BOND SALE OCCASION FOR MUCH GRATIFICATION (Continued from Page One) facilitate delivery of the securities by September 15. The necessity for the new bond is sue, now sold, dates back to the ; chilly night in February, 1935, when the Chowan High School at Cross Roads was destroyed by fire. Un daunted by the conflagration the countryside and the county commis sioners started hopeful plans to raise the money by various federal project plans, and for a time it be gan to look as if there might be such success. But it was at a period when most of Chowan’s anticipations of federal aid got nowhere, and all through the rest of 1935 and into 1936 utter futility resulted. Then last year the commissioners, pressed by the new school’s needs and the requirements of the law that a school should be built, took the bull by the horns and decided to raise the money as a debt of Chowan. An is sue of SIOO,OOO bonds was approved, which was subsequently cut to $90,- 000. It was pending delay in the sale of these that the Local Govern ment Commission approved the an ticipation notes, which have been sev eral times renewed and which will now be lifted once the bonds have been paid for. But the story goes further. Os the , bond issue which was supposed to build the new school and improve the one here, more than $60,000 was spent at the Cross Roads leaving a balance insufficient to do what was desired to the Edenton school. The commissioners were asked for more money, sufficient to add to this balance to do the work desired, * | PRESTON DRUG STORE I WE DELIVER | I Sutton's Drug Store Inc. I | H. M. It was then that Superintendent John A„ Holmes asked for permission to re open an old WPA or PWA project, against which the balance of the $90,000 in the county’s hands would stand as the county’s portion of 45- 55 grant by the government. The reopening of the project back ed by Congressman Lindsay Warren recently got it on the preferred list of such grants for presidential ap proval, and on the day before the President visited Fort Raleigh this summer Warren was able to wire and write that the grant had been put through. This share by the government, through PWA channels, with what was left out of the bond issue will enable the local school authorities to shortly start their work and complete it in its entire ty to the satisfaction of the town and county.
