PAGE TWO ——— - ■ Dance Climax To Bridge Celebration SPACIOUS EDENTON ARMORY EXPECTED TO ATTRACT LARGE CROWD ON AUGUST 2S . D High Hatters of Nor folk Will Play For Dancers From Many Sections Fireworks or no fireworks, rain or shine, not all of the closing celebra tion excitement will take place on the south side of the great vehicular bridge on the night of August 25, for right here in Edenton a mammoth dance, featuring one of the liveliest orchestras in this sector, is scheduled for the new national guard armory. It is to be termed “Bridge Celebra tion Ball,” and in addition to Edenton ians will be sponsored by enthusiasts from fifteen other main towns in the Albemarle. Guy’s “High Hatters” orchestra, of Norfolk, Va., under the leadership of Alfred R. Guy, and with ten asso ciates playing all kinds of string and swing instruments, will be the main drawing card. Inasmuch as these orchestrians have been a leading fac tor in dance entertainment at the Monticello Hotel, Norfolk, the John Marshal Hotel, Richmond, and at Old Point Comfort, Virginia Beach, and has been frequently sponsored by the Junior League of Norfolk and a ma jority of other social organizations in the Tidewater territory, a good time is assured for those who have a chance to follow their leadership in Edenton. The other towns on both sides of the Sound which have agreed to join with Edenton as sponsors for the forthcoming ball, are Belhaven, Co lumbia, Creswell, Roper, Robersonville, Winiamston, Windsor, Ahoskie, Gatesville, Sunbury, Eliza beth City, Hertford, Murfreesboro and Manteo. Inasmuch as these communities are centering their daylight activities on August 25, on the ceremonies at the bridge and have made no plans for night entertainments at home, it is expend a great concourse will con gregate here and make of the “Bridge Celebration Ball” in Edenton a huge success. |Hu Hll m I I 77 Rooms With Bath 1 HOTEL j JOSEPH HEWES | *b Extends a Welcome To Visitors <> < > Attending the Celebration, Opening and. ; : Dedication of the Bridge Across i; o it j | Albemarle Sound < I; —— and ; GREETINGS <► < » J To the Fine People of South Albemarle j| X _ __ * v Food Prompt Service ! Dancing has always been a popular pastime in the Albemarle, and this year the various balls sponsored alone by Edentonians have always been well . attended. The presence of Guy and his* “High Hatters” will prove an add ed assurance of even a greater crowd than heretofore. The customary $1.50 dancing fee for couples will be in vogue again as . will the half-fare price for spectators using the gallery seats. Special ar rangements will be made for parking i in the immediate neighborhood of the Armory, and those who attend, i whether from far or near, are slated . for an enjoyable evening under one i of the best orchestras to be secured , hereabouts and on the finest dancing . floor in all northeastern Carolina, t W. A. “Spec” Jones will again be the ball’s impresario. tee chowa» Herald, edenton, n. c. Small Amount Beef Cattle In Chowan Only Two Car Loads Fattened For Market During- February and March Most of the meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products consumed in Chowan County are produced locally, with some to sell. About one-half of our farmers have their own family cqws and most all of them have enough poultry and hogs for their own needs. Due to a higher price for hogs the past four years, our farmers have made a slight increase in the number raised for market, yet not as many were sold from the county as there was before and during the depres sion. Due to the waste soy beans and peanuts which are left in the fields after harvest, a good many hogs are fattened each fall from these soy beans and peanuts. Sanitation and hog cholera are among our problems here. Over 8,000 hogs were treated against cholera during the year. Sani tation is being practiced by a few leading farmers with good results. One farmer has built portable far rowing houses for the brood sows and provided lots for each sow and her litter of pigs. The pigs weaned from the sows kept under the above condi tions made a more rapid growth than those .from sows kept under ordinary conditions. The owner stated that the new houses and lots more than paid for themselves £he first season. Around 5,000 hogs will be shipped from Chowan County this year, in addition to the home needs. Only a few iarmers are raising beef cattle. Twcf car loads were fat tened for the market and sold during February and March. Two silos were constructed, one a stave silo and the other a tile dflo. Poultry is to be found on most every farm and the indbme, if a rec ord was kept, would be more than the entire cotton crop. In addition to supplying the needs of the local market here, our poultry and eggs are sold on the Norfolk and Richmond markets. Edenton Laundry Serves Wide Area Expects to Make Service • Available to South Al bemarle Section With Opening of Bridge Under the management of Charles P. Wales, who came to Edenton from the State of New York in 1931, to build and open the Edenton laundry, the business has shown a steady growth each year, practically doub ling, and some years more than a doubled previous volume passing through the plant. Beginning in a small way, Mr. Wales soon discovered that his plant was too small to handle the demands that were being made upon it. The capacity of the plant was reached within the first 12 months after opening and starting operations. Additions were built, new and more machinery was added, and only re cently, or within the past year, the laundry purchased additional land and erected another building, install ing the latest equipment. The laundry operates three trucks, and in addition to daily service in Edenton, maintains service within a radius of 10 to 100 miles from two to five times per week. With the open ing of the bridge, however, this mile age will be considerably reduced in serving Plymouth, Columbia and oth er points south of the Sound. Mr. Wales is proprietor of the laun dry. Joseph P. Rowlett is plant superintendent, and W. C. Hollowell is assistant. The plant employs reg ularly from 30 to 35 people. Sutton’s Drug Store Is Progressive Firm F. O.
