PAGE TWO SUNDAY SCHOOL IISSON . I * PETER PREACHES TO GENTILES International Sunday School Lesson for March 5, 1939 Golden Text: “Lode unto me, , and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” —Isiah 45:22. (Lesson Text: Acts 10:1-48) Although the great Commission given to His disciples, just before he " ascended unto Heaven had command ed them to preach the Gospel to “all nations,” the disciples were slow to carry the gospel to the Gentiles. In our lesson last Sunday we learned that the Gospel had been preached in Samaria, but the Samaritans were re garded by the Jews as partly Jew ish. Phillip had also preached to and won the Ethopian eunuch but he was probably a proselye who had embrac ed the full Jewish faith, else he would not have gone up to Jerusalem to worship. Up until this time, there had been no recorded instance of preaching to the Gentiles. However, in the pro vidence of God this was no longer to be. In the city of Caesarea, there lived a Roman centurion, a man of clean life and devout spirit. Realiz ing the emptiness of his pagan reli gion and hungry for something more soul-satisfying, this man, Cornelius, was praying to God for guidance. As he prayed, he received a message to send to Joppa for a man named Simon Peter, who would tell him what j to do. Without question, Cornelius! obeyed and sent three men to Joppa. The next day, just as the messen gers were nearing Joppa, Peter, who was staying at the house of one Simon, a tanner, while awaiting the noon-hour meal, went upon the housetop to pray. While praying, he, too, received a vision from the Lord. It seemed to him as though the heav ens opened before him and a great Mrs. Myrtle Ashley Narrowly Escaped Death On Highway Mrs. Myrtle Ashley, 26, narrowly escaped, death late Saturday near Dipsey Doodle filling station at Cross Roads when she was struck by an automobile while walking on the highway. She received two fractured' ribs and was terribly cut and bruised about the legs, arms and head by being dragged, on the pavement. Her husband, Leroy Ashley and brother in-law, Raleigh Ashley, were in the car at the’kimdlof the accident and following conflicting stories as to how the injuries occurred, Raleigh Ashley, who was driving the car at the time, is being held by officers. Ashley will face at least five charges in connection with the acci dent, with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, providing Mrs. Ashley’s condition will permit her to appear in court. BIRTH AND DEATH Born to Mr. and Mrs. Drew Welch on Saturday, February 25, a daugh ter, Mary Elizabeth. The baby died Sunday afternoon and was buried Monday afternoon in the Welch Ceme tery. Funeral services were conduct ed by Rev. J. T. Byrum. Some of the animals were acceptable for food according to the Mosaic Law while others in it were considered ceremonially “unclean” and thus could not be eaten by any Jew. Sud denly Peter heard a voice command ing him to kill and eat but Peter still true to his Jewish customs .de clared, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” Then the voice answer ed, “What God hath cleansed, that call thou not common.” The vision was repeated twice again, but Peter failed to understand its meaning. However, just as the vision dis appeared the messengers from Cor nelius arrived,. A voice declared to him, “Behold, three men seek thee; arise, hnd get thee down, and go with them, nothing doubting, for I have sent them.” Peter arose immediate ly and went down. After they had explained their mission, Peter was convinced that it was the will of the Lord that he should go with them. Upon arriving in Caesarea, he was greeted by Cornelius, who explained why he had sent for him. To Cor nelius and the gathered friends and relatives, Peter began to preach, with such clarity and force that be fore he finished, the gathered crowd was thoroughly convinced and the Holy Spirit descended upon them. Not alone does this lesson empha size the Gospel of Jesus Christ re moves all racial barriers, that his I salvation is for all “nations”, but it ! also calls attention to the fact that morally “good” men like Cornelius, are just as much in need of Jesus, the Savior, as anybody else. Our right eousness is not sufficient, for, as Peter declared to the Sanhedrin, “In none other is there salvation, for neither is there any other name un der heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.” your shoe rebuilding jobs to us for guaranteed satisfactory work.
