Rev. W. T. C. Briggs Rays Passage Os NewNbmageLaw Urges Legislature That Will Erase Law From Statute Books * ■w mm. w. *T, C v Briggs, of.Tyner, strongly resents the recent law (Ji acted by the General Assembly mak ing it compulsory for contracting couples to produce a hearth certificate before being issued a marriage li cense. In a letter to The Herald Mr. Briggs has this to say: “I am not looking for any fist and skull scrap with John White, nor do I hold in scorn any physician who is a Christian gentleman, and who would acorn to abuse the confidence of the husbands whose wives and daughters come into their care for medical at tention. But I do want to say that when it h«s come to the pass that a nice, clean, blushing, virtuous young woman has to walk up and expose her body from Cherokee to Currituck to some abominable, old lustful liber tine of a doctor before she can obtain a marriage license to march down the aisle of the church and stand before toe altar of matrimony, I just want to say that the recent Legislature of hjprth Carolina has enacted a law that was conceived, forged and for mulated in a devil’s hell. - “What has the State got to do with marriage anyway? Marriage is a matter of religion, and the Constitu tion of the United States specifically says that, ‘Congress, shall enact no laws respecting the establishment of religion or the free exercise thereof.’ With such an indecent marriage law as has recently been enacted in this State, I cannot blame the young people for going to another state to be married. Nor should I blame them when once they do flee the in decency of such a law should they just remain in the stale that solemnizes their marriage vows without exposing them to such beastly indecencies. “Such an indecent and intolerant law as the one I refer to is calculated to bring about more adultery and cause more young couples to cohabit without being married by the State than the world has perhaps ever thought of. And may the God of Heaven speedily give us a legislature that will do honor to and save Jche name of our State for decency by erasing such an indecent law from the statutes. This frame-up of doctors for laws in their own interest by creating scares is an outrage that ought to be recented. Doctors have had enough laws enacted to drive people to them for medical attention that is not desired, but resented by the citizens, and it is time to call a halt.” f COLERAIN —o Miss Mary Belle Robinson returned to her home Monday night, after spending sometime here with Miss Helen Phelps.
