Rotarians Staging
Attendance Drive
John Graham and C. E.
Kramer Chosen as
Leaders of Sides
At last week’s meeting of the
Edenton Rotary Club it was decided
to stage an attendance contest to
continue for four weeks. In charge
of the contest will be John Graham
and C. E. Kramer, who were named
by President Spec Jones as captains
of two teams. The captains will
choose their sides similar to choosing
up for a baseball team and the con
test will no doubt stimulate attend
ance during the four weeks.
At the close of the contest the los
ing side will be required to enter
tain the winners, which will no
doubt be in the form of an oyster
roast.
At last week’s meeting Charles
Wales made a splendid address dur
ing which he explained Edenton’s
water. Mr. Wales presented speci
mens of both hard and soft water, to
which he added an equal number of
drops of soap and by shaking the
water showed the difference in effect
of the two kinds of water. While
Edenton’s water is pure, Mr. Wales
explained that it proves right costly
due to its hardness which forms
scales in boilers and pipes, besides
requiring a much greater amount of
soap or powders to secure desired
results.
December Was Record
Month For Studebaker
J. H. McMullan, local Studebaker
dealer, was informed this week that
December sales of 14,522 units at the
factory not only were a record for
the month but represented the larg
est volume of business done in any
month since August, 1928. Fourth
quarter sales of .36,942 units were
the largest of any quarter in more
than eleven years. Sales for the
year of 114,196 units were consider
ably more than twice those of 1938
when 52,605 units were sold.
“Studebaker closed its most suc
cessful sales year in more than a de
cade with unfilled orders the largest
in our history for a year-end,” said
Paul G. Hoffman, president. “The
substantial success of our new low
priced car, the Champion, is respon
sible in large measure for the highly
gratifying results for 1939. We sold
more Champion in the nine months
the car has been on the market than
we had projected for its first full
year.”

nation of Mrs. W. W. Bateman as
publicity chairman, was accepted
with regrets, and Miss Mary Foy
Peterson was appointed to succeed
her.
