Friends all over Chowan County
were shocked Friday morning when
they learned that Calvin Andrew
Haste died very suddenly the night
before ait the home of his daughter,
Mrs. W. H. Dail. He was 78 years
of age and had enjoyed spdendid
health all of his life, death coming as
a result of an internal hemorrhage.
He lived only four minutes after he
was stricken. Eating a hearty sup
per Thursday night, the deceased
was in high spirits and expressed his
intention to aitten/i the meeting of
boards of election to be held in
Edenton Saturday.
Mr. Haste was the son of the late
John Calvin and Rachel Barnes
Haste. He was bom February 11,
1862, in Bertie County. When only
three months old he was brought to
Chowan County by an uncle, Andrew
Haste, after his father was killed in
the Civil War and his mother died.
Being reared during the reconstruc
tion days, he was able to enjoy only
the bare necessities of life* and
though he was deprived of education
al advantages, he developed into a
prominent farmer and a strong be
liever in education. He served on
his community and district school
boards for over 20 years and always
favored employing a local girl to‘
teach in her home school 'if she de
sired to de sa
in his church life, Mr. Haste was
very faithful, being a member of the
Rocky Hock Baptist Church, where
he attended both church and Sunday
School regularly. He taught a class
in the Sunday School for many years.
Politically, he was a staunch Dem
ocrat, having affiliated with the par
ty at the age of 21, and during his
life upheld the Democratic principles,
being especially active during the
80’s and 90’s under Republican rule.
He helped to carry it through one of
its most trying times and rejoiced
to see it grow to be one of the great
est political parties in existence.
Surviving are one son, J. Craig
Haste, and a daughter, Mrs. W. H.
Dail, with whom he lived. Six step
children also survive, Mrs. C. S.
Moore of Huntington, Fla.; Mrs. R.
Bruce Etheridge of Manteo; Mrs. J.
B. Spillman of Raleigh; Mrs. Mary
W. Shaw of Charlotte; Mrs. P. W.
Hass of Washington, D; C., and W.
S. Webb of Norfolk; Va.
Funeral services were largely at
tended Saturday afternoon in Rocky
Hock Church, with the pastor, the
Rev. Frank Cale, officiating. Inter
ment was made in the family bury
ing ground.

T. R. Tynch, Sr., J. E. Bunch and
J. R. Perry.

At Meeting Held at

Miss Rebecca Colwell, County
Home Demonstration Agent, and J.
W. Crawford, farm agent, met with
a group of young peopQe.in the Com
munity House at Cross Roads last
week for the purpose of forming an
Older Youth Service Club in Chowan
County. L. R. Harrill, State Exten
sion Club specialist, met with the
group and discussed the purpose of
the organization emphasizing the
fact that it was a club made up of
young people, governed by them and
carried out according to their plans
and regulations, and that they should
feel that it was their organization.
A goodly number was present at
the first meeting and Mrs. Percy
Smith and Miss Jessie Byrum were
appointed temporary chairmen.

Missionary Speaker
The Woman’s Missionary Society
of the Baptist Church will meet at
the church Monday afternoon at 3:30
o’clock. Rev. Frank Cale will be the
guest speaker for the occasion and
all members as well as others are
urged to attend.
Chamber Os Commerce
Meets On April 12th
A meeting of the Chamber of Com
merce will be held Friday night,
April 12, at which time J. C. Baske
ville will be the guest speaker. This
will be more than an ordinary meet
ing, details of which will be an
nounced next week.

Thieves Ransack Ed
Habit’s Store Sunday
Ed Habit’s dry cleaning plant
was a victim over the week-end of
the wave of recent robberies in
Edenton, the store being entered and
ransacked Sunday. Fortunately, Mr.
Habit, late Sunday afternoon, went
into his store and discovered that a
small quantity of change had been
taken from the cash register and
that a large quantity of merchandise
was missing from the counters and
shelves.

A young Negro man was seen loi
tering back of the building, but made
a getaway when he suspected he was
noticed. No arrest has been made.
