SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON CHRIST AND PERSONALITY International Sunday School Lesson for January 12, 1941 Golden Text: “Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment?” —Matt. 6:25. (Lemon Text: Luke 14:1-14.) ■■ j 1 . T This materialistic age in which we live seems to have lost sight of the intrinsic value of man. In his quest for the material benefits to be deriv 4i, the tendency has been, to a great extent, to under-estimate the contri bution made by the men and women who have toiled to produce the re sulting wealth. The Bible tells us that, after the Lord of Heaven created the world, He found that it was good. How ever, not satisfied that it should exist unenjoyed, He “formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7.) It is well to realize the fact that man came into being because God desired it. Man is a component part of the creation of God. While in many ;iways man is similar to the animal Jpfe which God also created— being f dependent on nature for air, food and water—he is superior to animals in that he was made “in the image of God” and has powers, in a limited way, that are similar to the infinite powers of God. The greatest dis tinction of man is that he has per sonality and it is in the fullness of personality that man is most like God. The world into which Jesus came had various estimates of the vallue of human life. While the Psalmist sang ffi man as just a little lower than the angels and crowned with glory and honor, the Publican, in his prayer to God, declared* “I thank God I am not a Gentile, a woman, or a dog,” evi (fently rating each as of similar worth. The Greeks of his day left their sickly children and their aged people in the mountains to die, and often, girl babies, bom in Egypt, were destroyed at birth. In all of his teachings, Jesus put a higher evaluation on human life. All of his ministry presupposed the eternal value of a human soul. Jesus’ teachings was not one of restrictions, as some seem to think, but he de clared, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” The incident related in the first Jbtk verses of our lesson for this week illustrates that Jesus thought person || QUALITY I HARDWARE ■ Farming Equipment 1 Fishing Supplies Paints - Varnishes 1 Hughes - Holton HARDWARE CO. While eating at the home of a Pharisee on the Sabbath day, a sick man came before him. Turning to the lawyers and Phari sees gathered in the house, Jesus asked, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day?” probably mindful of the hue and cry which arose when he healed the woman- in the synagogue shortly before. When they would not answer him, Jesus healed the man and let him go. Realizing that they were probably questioning the pro priety of his action, however, Jesus answered their mental questionings by saying: “Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the Sabbath day?” They could not ans wer because they knew that they would do just what Jesus had said. We have heard of farmers who pro vide well-proportioned feed for their pure-bred livestock who are not as solicitous for their own families, not to mention the tenants on their farm. Have you ever passed a farm on the highway on which there were huge well-painted, over-flowing barns and silos and the farmhouse was merely a crude, unpainted, unattractive : shack? Again, in verses 7 to 11, Jesus de clares that personality is more valuable than ambition. Jesus does not condemn ambition as such, but he does condemn the urge for self-ad vancement at the expense of others. There is nothing wrong in the pos session of wealth provided the rights and welfare of others have not been overlooked or forgotten. After all, Jesus declares, “What shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36.) The only thing eternal in this world is the human soul. Every man, woman and child should be encour aged to develop a personality which will merit the respect of his fellow men and the approval of God. Chris tians must come to the place where they can treat every man as an indi vidual, regardless of race or color, or station in life, realizing that Christ died for all men. I REPUBLICAN | I Bertie County I By Walter Hughes « J FROZEN WORDS You all might think this is false. But Bob Rea told this around 45 years ago at the time of that big freeze. Mr. Rea lived in Edenton, but he run a fishing business across the Sound at what is now known as Rea’s Beach. Well, that was the coldest time that has ever been known in this country. The Sound froze over for keeps. People walked back and forth across the Sound at tending to business. I saw some people taking a half-barrel of whis key from Edenton to Merry Hill on a sleigh. I saw Dr. Dillard driving a pair of horses out on Edenton Bay. The mail was carried from Plymouth to Edenton across the Sound. The ice was 14 inches thick. Mr. Rea and his hands were over the Sound mending up nets when the cold spell broke down on this coun try. In a few days the Sound was frozen solid. So Mr. Rea and his hands made ready to walk to Edenton on the ice, all of them living in Edenton. I saw them when they were coming across. In about a month the ice thawed out. So Mr. Rea and his help sailed back across the Sound to his fishery. And when they came near the camp which was built over the water, they heard people talking in the camp. He had left the camp locked. When he reached the camp he ,found that he was listening to the yoices of himself and his hands talk ing to each other when they left the camp a month before. Their words had frozen up and were thawing out on their return. THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, N. JC., THURSDAY.
