fleet Lack of Want In
Community
better than in previous years is re
flected in the fact that this year
will be no drive to secure funds
the Stocking Fund, nor will it be
to distribute presents to
any poor in the community. This in
formation came from Miss Louise,
Coke Tuesday. Miss Coke has for
many years been a leader in this form
of providing Christmas cheer in local
homes on Christmas Eve.
Miss Coke said that, contrary to
previous years, there have been only
• few names sent to her and these
will be taken care of by other means,
so that it will not be necessary to j
make the usual appeal for funds. ■

“NOW, THEREFORE, .be it -re
solved, by the Town Council of the
Town of Edenton, and the County
Commissioners of Chowan County
that the aforesaid resolves be
adopted.”
Though the Counwty Commission-
ers and Town Councilmen are very,
much interested in the above propo
sition, they also decided to pay some
immediate recognition in a less ela
borate way to the boys now in uni-«
form. The two boards, therefore, 1
are jointly sponsoring a double-page
section in next week’s Herald which,
will contain the name of every |
Chowan County boy now in the ser-.
vice. This double-page will also be
reprinted on good quality paper, it
being the belief that many of the
boys or their families would like to
preserve a copy. The plan is place
the mon_ sale at Quinn’s Furniture
Store, with the proceeds from the
sale going into the fund to be raised
for a permanent memorial.
While efforts are being made, with
the cooperation of the Chowan Coun
ty Draft Board, to have an accurate
list, it is altogether possible that a
few names might be missed. For
that reason any relative or friend of a
boy from Chowan County whose name
does not appear will confer a favor
by notifying TThe Herald so that
proper correction can be made.
Stage All Set For
Christmas Party !
j
1 Continued from Page Or.ei
will be used in determining the,
(winner of this prize.
The United States Navy Orchestral
will furnish the music for the occa
sion, which is assurance that this i
| part of the program will be all that j
| could be desired. The outfit includes |
a number of professional musicians 1
who 'were associated with outstand- *
ing bands before they enlisted.
A floor show has developed into
more than was at first ant.cipated,
for this alone will be well worth the
price of admission. For this feature,
!' the Gordon E. Smith road show has
| been engaged, which includes Mr.
Smith as pianist and master of cere
monies. The show includes five acts,
a dance team presenting three num
bers, an impersonator who has ap
peared on a national radio hookup, a j
black-face comedian who has also j
broadcast over the radia, a swing j
singer who has appeared on Kay j
Kyser’s program, and Mr. Smith, who I
provides a number of piano selections.
This same show was engaged dur
ing the summer to furnish the enter
tainment at an affair in Washington,
D. C., directed by Secretary of the
Navy Frank Knox and the Mayors of
North Carolina.
That the party will be a success,
both as to revenue, and attendance,
is confidently expected in that the
prediction that at least $1,0<)0 will be j
realized for the Navy Relief fund.|
As to attendance, those interested in !
the affair have been assured that a !
bus load will attend from Plymouth, 1
as well as another bus load from Eli
zabeth City. Many other visitors are
also expected, due to the fact that al
ready every vacant room at the hotel
has been reserved for the night.
In this respect both Mr. Cunney
and Harold Woodall would like to be
j notified if any person can* spare a
room for the night in order to accom
modate any visitor who may not
have a room engaged.
Indications point to the party be
ing the most outstanding ever staged
< in Edenton, its purpose being to ush
er in the Christmas season and raise
funds for Navy Relief.

3,300 Register For
1 Liquor In Chowan
Half Dozen Extra Clerks
Pressed Into Service
During Rush
Approximately 3,300 persons regis
tered through Tuesday in Chowan
County to secure sales permit books
to purchase liquor in a State-wide
ration program. During Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday of last week
the local ABC Store was a veritable
| bee-hive w.th crowds gathering to
: secure their coupon books, while on
Thursday and since then the books
have been issued on the second floor
of the Court House.
* The registration was a tremendous
job facing ABC Board members, who
were obliged to employ about half a
j dozen clerks to assist in the regis
' tration.
1 The rationing system has already
had its effect in that the long wa t
ing line outside the store as has been
previously the case for some time,
has practically vanished.
Under the rules of the rationing
idea any person convicted of drunk
enness or any crime in which liquor
is a contributing factor, is deprived
of the sales permit book.
