Coffield, chairman of the Red Cross surgical dressings project, reports that 923 hours have been contributed by 105 Edenton la dies during February in making these much-needed dressings. Noah C. Ward Dies Following Operation Chow an Contractor Suc cumbs In Elizabeth City Hospital Noah Cecil Ward died in the Eliza bethy City Hospital late Wednesday afternoon of last week, where he had been a patient for ten days. Mr. Ward succumbed to complications which developed following an opera tion for appendicitis. He was 69 years old and had been in ill health for the past few years. A native of Chowan County and a member of one of the oldest families in the County, Mr. Ward came to Edenton about 20 years ago to make his home. For many years he was a contractor, his services being much in demand throughout the years. Surviving are his stepmother, Mrs. H. N. Ward of Ryland, two brothers, Norfleet Ward of Portsmouth, Va., and Nathan Ward of Aulander; two sisters, Mrs. John Eason of Wil mington, and Mrs. Locke Mitchell of Harrellsville: two half sisters, Mrs. T. J. Hoskins and Mrs. A. L. Mid yette, and three half-brothers, Julian Ward and Ernest Ward of Edenton, and Randolph Ward of Ryland. A short burial service was held at the graveside in the family burying ground on the homeplace near Ry land Friday afternoon, the Rev. John Byrum, pastor of Ballards Bridge Church, officiating. Colored Births Lead Whites In February Colored births again led white births in Chowan County during February, according to figures releas ed by the local office of the Bertie- Chowan Health District. During the month there were 12 colored births and 10 white, while five Negroes died compared with two whites. One colored stillbirth was also re ported.
