PAGE FOUR Marines Win Two Gaines In Oping Baseball Season Lester Jordan Holds Leathernecks to Tie Game Sunday On Saturday afternoon at Hicks Field the Edenton Marines made their debut by defeating Merry Hill by a score of 22-2. Mahlikowski, Marine pitcher, limited the opposition to Spur hits, while striking out nine. Before a crowd Sunday afternoon a double-header was play ed, the first 'between a picked Eden ton team, while the night-cap oppon ents were Consolidated Aircraft of Elizabeth City. The first game de veloped into a pitchers’ duel between Lester Jordan, local pitching ace home on furlough, and Chinnis. Jor dan limited the Marines to one hit, while 11 went out by the strike-out route. Chinnis allowed four hits. The game was called after the seven th inning with the score 1-1 in or- Her to begin the second game. The ! highlight of the game was a double j in the sixth by Chinnis, which ruined Jordan’s chances for a no-hit game. In the second game the Marines had little trouble in defeating Con solidated Aircraft, the final score being 9-0. The Marines opened the; first inning with a 4-run lead which was never seriously threatened under the masterful pitching of Stevenson, who allowed only four safe bingles and fanned 15 batters. Two circuit clouts were made during the game, one by Platt and the other by Mah iikowski. The Marines hit safely 14 times and made only one error.
